mechanic's forum purpose

It has occurred to me that I misunderstood the purpose of this subforum. The title "Talk To A Mechanic" lead me to believe that it was a place for people(not necessarilly mechanics) to post questions about how to do certain tasks on their own table. I'm now thinking that it's really for mechanics to talk to each other and maybe potential customers to ask questions more in line with them knowing how to hire the right mechanic.

I've been involved with other forums, for instance on motorcyles, and there were a lot of people helping each other but they weren't profressional bike mechanics, they were just people doing it as a hobby. If I had something to offer I'd be glad to post it but if I were a professional mechanic depending on people bringing me their bikes and my post were likely to loose me business I don't I would of been happy to post it.

Maybe there should be another subforum for people who want to ask a question of other non-mechanics that have done things on their own tables and may like to help others once they've done it and this subforum should be more clearly for mechanics. The phrase "questions for and conversations between mechanics" doesn't really spell out who is welcome to ask the questions.

No one should be expected to work for nothing.

So I apologize for asking stuff that I shouldn't and won't do it anymore.

I think you been cool. The "pests" show themselves, they are different though. They want highend equip and mechanics who are the best for CHEAP. They are nits and never will be happy.

You are doing research and asking good questions. People who are trying to get mechanics on here to "teach" them the trade via this forum come and go.

The problem starts when non mechanics start giving out advice like they know what they are talking about, Regurgitating stuff one reads, does not give them the knowledge to DO IT, therefore they should hold back, they usually dont.

There are guys like Rexus31 an his pal in Cali that restored their own tables and paid a great mechanic to set them up! They are very happy guys! Hats off to them,

I was apprehensive about posting my own diy table work within this specific sub-forum. Honestly thought it may be better suited to the 'Blog' section. However, who actually looks in the Blog section, and I thought I may even elicit some seasoned advice by the pros.

In the end, this section doesn't get a ton of traffic. Having a thread or two that either displays efforts and/or asks questions that nearly everyone in here (that isn't a pro) would want to ask, isn't a bad thing.

A simple, I am not a mechanic, goes a long way. There are AMAZINGLY knowledgeable and experienced mechanics on the forum. There are also easier questions that diy-mechanics can help with. I might be in the wrong here, but as long as you're not trying to pass off info as if you were a pro-mechanic there is value in differing perspectives. Respect the actual mechanics and learn from them. If you know something, it's ok to answer, no need to expect only the mechanics to answer simple questions. Their helpers probably aren't doing the "surgical" stuff, but it's a huge help to "hold the flashlight" so to speak.

I am not a table mechanic but there are some simpler questions that I can sometimes answer after "restoring" my Gold Crown. I always point out when answering a question that I am not a table mechanic even if my answer is known to be correct.

I tend to rant and rave !! ok the name calling thing aint anyones best quality. IMO this is pool, cussing is part of pool and pool rooms!!

I only rant and rave because I care! :)

I been in the trenches in here specifically since march of 2013. the Forum has DRASTICALLY changed in a positive way. The amount of fighting and bickering has subsided substantially!

My apologies for my craziness on here from time to time, its because I am passionate and I CARE about my profession. I LOVE POOOL !!!

I've shared more knowledge and tricks of this trade than most all table mechanics combined have contributed to this forum. I've also been harder on table mechanics posting in this forum than ANYONE has, because I refuse to let someone who has NO IDEA what they're talking about mislead the viewers here, the "community" of followers and table mechanics that do provide good knowledge here. I've seen many table mechanics get their start right here from this forum, building knowledge they would have never learned on their own, and huge improvements from those that were already working in this trade when they became members, some like Trent, Dave, Sheldon, Jack, Jay, Zach,, and many others. What use to bother me in the past was new members asking old questions only to find myself repeating the same answers, until it starts to become iratating, BUT, then instarted noticing members who are not table mechanics stepping up and answering those new questions to old answers, and that's when I started to realize hey, this "community " we've built here is finally working, helping each other, and I just can't find anything wrong with that. Now I find myself complimenting many of the members here for providing the correct information most all of the time, I love it! Members here have learned a ton about pool tables that they would have NEVER learned on their own, and have sure stepped up and added to this forum in such a positive way that it makes it almost impossible to pull the wool over anyone's eyes anymore.

I've either talked to, or at least replied to almost every member in this forum at one time or another. And have NEVER failed to take someone's phone call seeking advice, and made sure everyone knows how to find my phone number, as I don't hide my contact information.

So yeah, I'm very proud of how this forum has changed over the years since I joined in 2006.

Thank you for your contributions to this forum and to the trade. The information that you've willingly shared has elevated the level of service in this trade, on an international scale. It has also served to educate the customer base.

All of this has allowed for a number of us to make a better living, through providing a better service to the customer.

I remember when you first came on this forum, green as hell, but willing to learn, had your own ideas. We butted heads a few times over the coming years, but you kept at it, insisting on getting better and better. And I have to admit that from then until now, you've learned so much it blows my mind. I read your responses to other posters questions, and for the life of me, can't find any faults in your answers or how you explain them! You have come a long way, and I'm very proud of the work you do, you've EARNED the right to be called a Billiards Technician and not an installer👏
 
I use to get mad at everyone that posted up pictures in the "pictures of hack work" thread Shane Johnson started. Not because of the posting of the pictures which show horrible work that has been done by so called "Table Mechanics" but because its easy to point fingers at bad workmanship in this industry all day long, but because those who were pointing their fingers were also NOT showing their work, and what they did to correct the horrible work! That right there was the biggest negatives to that thread! Where was the credit to be given to the table mechanic who fixed that shoddy work, no where to be seen!!! Why not, was their work NO BETTER??? I told everyone don't post pictures to this thread pointing fingers UNLESS you also show what YOU did to correct the problems, or you're no better than the person you're pointing your finger at!!!! When it comes right down to it, we're ALL following someone else's work 99% of the time. Are you better than, the same as, or worse than who worked on that table last? And I've always had a problem posting pictures of completed jobs, they show NOTHING of the skills of the table mechanic that worked on the table, and therefore fail to show the difference between good and bad work for the viewers looking to see what the difference is, because they're looking to hire someone to work on THEIR table next! Education of the customers is the ONLY way to defend YOUR trade and set yourself apart from those who don't give a shit, and have no problem robbing a customer of their hard earned dollars....because they DIDN'T know about YOU and YOUR work before they called in the hack!!!

Have you tried cutting 1 piece slates in half, then steel plate joining them back together after installing the table, because the customer really wanted a 1 piece slate, until they found out there was no way in hell of getting the slate in downstairs through the window they took their old 3 piece 8ft home style table out through, so in their mind a 7ft should just go right in😅🤣😂

I need to have a table moved to a new house and recovered as part of the process.

I know you're new here to AZB, but just letting you know in advance, any kind of information you can provide about the table will seriously help when seeking out the services of a table mechanic. The last thing they want to find when they arrive is 1st, they didn't bring enough help, 2nd, they wasn't prepared to move a 1 piece slate table, 3rd, you forgot to mention it was a Valley bar table and its downstairs. All kinds of things can go wrong , especially if you don't even know what kind of pool table you have. Same goes for where the table is being moved to.

And just so you're aware, based on the information you provided, you're either going to get no response, or someone may offer their services knowing no one else is going to do the job, then jack the hell out of the price, ESPECIALLY if you're facing a deadline to have the table out by!! Just think about what I told you, u don't mean to sound like I'm jumping on you, but this is very repetitive.
 
Ok, now go to the heading talk to a mechanic. The first 2 pertinent threads, click on the first one and see if theirs a mechanic listed that works in your area, thats a start
