The World Games 2022, Birmingham, AL

Thought about going to this but now that Vegas will have World 10 Ball, World Cup 3 Cushion, and WPBA all at same time I think I will go there instead. One of these days I'll get over to Birmingham for the races at Barber.

Depends on how far you want to walk or drive. Lots of area hotels if you’re driving for sure around Metro Birmingham. You could stay pretty cheap towards Leeds & Trussville areas as I imagine the crowds wouldn’t go that way but you’d still be minutes away (driving only). I imagine most within walking distance will be hard to find that month. ...
Closer in is the Redmont which has rooms with two double beds for about $350/night. That's with free cancellation. It's about a half-mile walk to the billiard venue (Sheraton). It seems to have reasonable reviews.

I took a look at some of the hotels back when you posted in October and it didn't even look like many were booking that far out. I need to take another look. Too much price gouging.

I think double is about what to expect generally, or 4 to 1 in Vegas.

From their website https://twg2022.com/sports/billiards/
Wonder why they have table size of by 0.1 ft- they have 9x4.6ft instead of 9x4.5ft :D
I didn't know snooker originated from India

I suspect there was some translation from metric. Or maybe they are using slightly random rail lengths to throw off the system players. o_O

The legend is that snooker was invented by the British army in India around 1875 by someone named Neville Chamberlain. I don't know if he was related to Neville "Peace in Our Time" Chamberlain.

From The Wiki That Knows Everything:

While serving at Jubbulpore in 1875 Chamberlain developed a new variation of black pool by introducing coloured balls into the game. It was dubbed snooker—a derogatory nickname given to first-year cadets studying at the Royal Military Academy at Woolwich that Chamberlain had heard about from a young Royal Artillery subaltern visiting the mess. Chamberlain later retorted to a fellow player who had failed to pot a coloured ball: "Why, you're a regular snooker". While explaining the term to his fellow officers Chamberlain, to mollify the officer concerned, remarked that they were all "snookers at the game" and the name snooker or snooker's pool immediately stuck.

It's a different Neville than the "let's give Hitler half of Europe"' guy. Here's an article about the many claims regarding snooker's invention.

By "9 x 4.6 foot" and "11.8 x 5.10 foot" the numbers after the decimal points are just inches, not tenths of a foot. Strange way to write it, though.
That makes perfect sense especially if something got translated by someone who doesn't do ' and ".

For $350/night it should have reasonable reviews
Especially in Birmingham. Many options in the 25-50 mile range at worst and spend less than $150. I’d almost bet on it. As I said earlier it depends on whether you want to drive or walk.

You’d be mere minutes from Barber, only a handful of exits down I-20. If you’re a motorcycle guy they have one of the best collections around period!

The latest "athlete in the spotlight" feature for the World Games is about Sameh Sidhom from Egypt:

The sports program of the 2022 World Games has been announced. It includes four billiard events. (This was originally scheduled for 2021, but got pushed back to July of 2022 when the Summer Olympic Games were delayed by a year.)

There are 30 sports included and 207 events, including these four billiard events:

Does anyone have a link to watch the 9-ball live stream? I can't fine one. Thanks.

You guys keep in mind that I was born and raised here in B'ham.
If any of y'all need a ride from your hotel to the Sheraton, I can pick up up from anywhere within
50 miles of town and when you're ready to go back to the motel I'll return and pick you up at the Sheraton.
I have a very nice, clean Toyota Venza that will comfortably seat 3 other passengers, (4 if y'all ain't real fat),
and any backpacks or whatever you want to carry.
I have room in the very back for a couple walkers if you need to use walkers and also I can attach my Yakima
bike rack and safely and securely take a wheelchair, or maybe 2.
I don't know the legalities of me hauling a passenger or what I would need to ask of you in payment, but I would like some compensation.
As for my driving, I retired from over-the-road trucking with approximately 1.25 million miles hauling flatbed, (mostly oversize/heavy-haul.
My last few years was hauling the long Wind Power Blades for Lone Star Transportation, so you'll be reasonably safe with me.
I'll be doing this for anyone here on Az reading this, not for any of the general public. I just thought I'd try to help out other Az'er's.

Looks like only the final 9 ball match will be streamed on the world games channel:

Anyone know if any of the other matches or billiards events will be streamed elsewhere?

It looks like the matches for 3/4 in 9 ball will also be streamed on the 24/7 channel. It looks like the women's final will be tape delayed. I have a question in to someone who might know.

I think a US network may have some broadcast rights in the US but I don't know the details.
