pool room expanding

so for all you cloth snobs read this. shame on you pt109 canada has corrupted you.

The Billiard Congress of America recommends a wool/nylon blend felt for 8-Ball and 9-Ball, and worsted cloth for Snooker and Billiards. Worsted cloths use long wool fibers that are twisted into very thin threads, while felt uses short wool and nylon blended fibers that create more of a “fuzzy” nap. Higher wool contents (90% and above) last longer, but they expand and contract with humidity changes. They should be kept in a room with good humidity control. Best would be with a humidifier and a dehumidifier. Lower wool contents (70% – 80%) are less likely to bow or wrinkle on some days. Many European tournament tables actually have heaters built into the slate to keep their high-wool cloth dry.

Worsted cloths will give you faster play on dry days, but slower play on humid days. Not having a nap, they do not require much brushing. They are generally faster and more accurate, though difficult to play on; as the ball will slide for a longer time before “English” takes over when the ball starts rolling. For this reason, professional players generally prefer the worsted cloth. They are more used to dealing with many cloth types, and difficult cloth gives them an advantage over less experienced players. That doesn’t mean that professional tournaments are generally played on worsted cloth, however. They are generally played on whatever cloth is already on the table, unless a cloth manufacturer has paid to switch the cloth as part of a sponsorship.

Normal felt (which comes in many different qualities) requires regular brushing to maintain a consistent direction of the nap – particularly during the first month or two of use. It is the most widely used cloth on American pool tables. It is a bit slower and can be a bit less accurate, but it gives the average player better ball control. “Players Cloth” is a pre-broken-in version of regular felt that is shaved slightly to make the fibers shorter. It requires less of a “break-in” period and it’s great for setting up a tournament table that will be played right away.

There are several coatings available on billiard felt now. They are generally designed to reduce damage from spilled drinks, etc. Just remember that “reduced” does not mean “prevent”. That means beer and wine.
Sorry, but FELT is NOT used in making ANY pool cloth!!

Billiard cloth is often erroneously called "felt," but felt is never used because it would tear to readily. The finest cloths are made of 100% worsted wool, similar to the type used in men's suits. The firm of Iwan Simonis of Verviers, Belgium, is probably the most famous manufacturer of billiard cloth. The company is approximately as old as billiards itself, a predecessor having been formed in 1453. Its preferred source of wool is the Australian Merino sheep. Spinning and weaving wool is a complex process requiring many steps and chemical treatments.

7. Woven felt

Woven felt is a type of felt fabric that textile manufacturers produce by applying heat, water, and pressure to pre-woven fabrics. The result is a matted, highly insulative fabric that can be much thinner than pressed felt.

and from encyclopedia britannia:

felt, a class of fabrics or fibrous structures obtained through the interlocking of wool, fur, or some hair fibres under conditions of heat, moisture, and friction. Other fibres will not felt alone but can be mixed with wool, which acts as a carrier. Several industries manufacture goods through the use of these properties. The goods produced include wool felt in rolls and sheets; hats, both fur and wool; and woven felts, ranging from thin billiard tablecloths to heavy industrial fabrics used for dewatering in the manufacture of paper.

you can click on the billiard link above and it takes you to where down the page 3rd paragraph ,, it say the woven woolen billiard cloth is refereed to as felt.

so it is okay to call billiard cloth felt. even if it is not technically felt. its accepted by the world even if many pool players are offended by that.
similar cloth is used on card tables and its called felt there as well. ever hear of the saying you got felted. after losing all your chips.

Did the Apple store move completely to another location? I've never heard of an Apple store downsizing. They are often packed wall to wall with customers.
At one time the pool room had the whole building and for reasons I dont know they gave the Apple store a part of it.
Now they took back about a third of the previous space.
It seems on week ends with league's and tournaments they did not have enough tables for everyone.
Pool is healthy here.

Good tables
Good food
Reasonable tables rates
Clean room
And a safe area
Does that do it for you?

Makes sense, apparenty the owner has act together, and understands business.

Those are reason many in Phoenix closed.

Bad food, nasty dirty, shit element of people don’t get booted, fale advertising on tournaments . Added money don’t get added.

Well if you are creative in business, have great staff, do promotions, and last do everything better then other owners you should go well.

I played in a big table pool league out of there in 2010 when it was called Table Steaks South. They used to open up the big doors on one side. I think a part of the building was a fire house previously. Enjoyed it but I was burning out of pool at the time and put the stick down for about a decade after that session.. Probably having my car window smashed out in their parking lot had something to do with it (along with a half dozen other cars). I liked the old Table Steaks at Sloan Lake better but that was long gone by then.

the city has changed so much since 2010. i live within walking distance of the old Paradise Lanes (Wheat Ridge Family Fun Center) and have just recently been reading old posts about it on here and kicking myself.

I have been to Paradise Lanes as I worked at Gambro which was a block south. When Gambro closed a big part of their company in 1999, they gave us the day off and many went there to drown their sorrows. Of course the company rewarded those let go with a super severance package - and then rewarded about half of them by rehiring them after getting the full package.. I was one of the unlucky that got to stay. I played in a travelling league that went up and down Colfax. We played out of the Lakewood Grill.

Actually I was confused. You are near FFC was eventually Hanks. We went there once for a Rec.Sports.Billiard meetup once. I played Hank when he owned a bar off of Federal.

i love hearing stuff like this. the Lakewood Grill is about 1.2 miles away (so i can get there) and i just reached out to them on FB to see if they wouldn't mind my coming in just to shoot in the mornings. I haven't heard back haha. There's another bar a mile away from me called Tavern on 26th, i went in the other day and asked the owner if he wouldn't mind opening up the table in the mornings for an hourly rate. he was clearly uninformed because he wanted $10 an hour for his 75c 7' valley with loose nappy cloth.

thanks, sorry, i was operating off of memory which is never a good idea.

I live south. I play out of the Mirage. The bar boxes are often open. That would unfortunately be a drive for you.

the clutch in my car went out so it would actually be about a days journey by foot 😂 that’s why im even willing to play on quarter tables, otherwise i would just drive to felt!

If i ever get my life back together i’ll come down to the mirage to play with you, though!

It was knowns as Hanks but had 2 other names on the building.
It was a pool room for 60 or more years.
Before it closed it was a run down dirty place that looked 60 years old, reminded me of the old run down rooms in Jersey.
I liked it.

indeed, sounds like i missed the boat by about ten years. nowadays the closest thing to a room around here is Holliday Bowling & Billiards — where they don’t let you play billiards.
