Statement from The Legends of Pocket Billiards

I can see selling the cloth, with autographs on it, but why sell "THE" table that the 714 was achieved on if other players will come along later to make attempts.

You would think all subsequent attempts would be done on the very same table.

The table on which the record was broken has worth to some as a piece of sports memorabilia.

How much remains to be seen until a sale is final.

It is very possible that part of the agreement with 60 minutes was to hold back footage at this time until their program airs.

Selling the table? That seems odd unless they have decided to do future runs on another table. Bobby says they are not shutting down, I believe him.

It would not be a terrible idea to start using a stock pocket GC/Pred or Diamond table for future events. It would kill most of the controversy and I think the current champs can, could and still will put up big numbers on a stock pocket table. 714? or 714 +? I dunno. It is possible. I don't think many people thought that would happen so quick either on any table.

I am hoping the series continues. I loved watching it.

Nothing to do with "60 Minutes."

The table is owned by Streetlight and they have chosen to offer it for sale. I believe there is a GC4 available to replace it if it goes. Lastly, *nothing* is going to kill the element of controversy on this, it just comes with the territory. Regardless, we will press on. It'll be a bit but more is coming, on a *free* stream.

They were talking about Gorst and Filler making attempts, and Chinakhov and SVB coming back for another try. I believe some of those were supposed to happen in late January and February.

Now they've sold the table, but say they still plan to continue the event.

There was an earlier discussion of the reasoning . Why would they want an attempt by Filler or Gorst or Schmidt or anyone else, if Shaw's record could be superseded in a matter of weeks? Never mind whether Bobby could handle paying out every few weeks when a new record is set. Better to sell the table and extricate themselves from any financial commitments to Street Lights, and maybe set up a new event in a year or two after Shaw has had a try at making money off his video.

The table is for sale, not sold.

And Bobby isn't looking to "extricate" himself from anything, lol.

Lou Figueroa

I think it hurt any possible news coverage that the recording was kept secret so it couldn't be replayed. Bobby didn't even release a montage of key shots that could be used for media interest. Perhaps 60 minutes will show it on their upcoming episode, but that's months after the actual event.
That is a common factor between the two, not a difference.

I agree with your originall comment as well. People paid a lot more attention when Maris' home run record was broken by McGuire than they did when Bonds broke it a few years later (there were other issues at play too of course).

It would have been hard for anyone to even report on Shaw's record as there were no meaningful photos or videos to go along with it, which I think compounded the apathy you noted. When Shaw's hometown news station did a little report on the record all they could show was Jayson taking into the camera and hitting balls at his own pool hall.[/QUOTE]

The LAST thing they want is John Schmidt trying to beat 714 on the same table! They won't even release the specs so he or anyone else could set up a table with the same specs so that their attempts are under the same conditions.

As I understand it, the controversy is due to refusing to disclose the table specs. It doesn't come with the territory. It is due to hiding information.

Changing to a tighter table would all but ensure that Jayson's record would be locked in place. John Schmidt haters (which some say includes the organizers of this event) would love that!

Since these guys appear to have built a table with modified specs to create favorable conditions for high runs, and now Jayson has run 714 on that favorable table, it is only fair that anyone else who wants to challenge 714 have that opportunity under the same conditions.

That can be done by making the same table available, which they are eliminating by getting the table out of there. Or, by publishing all the specs for the table, which they refuse to do.

Selling that table and/or not giving out specs points directly to your bolded statement and to me, is the epitome of why most American's don't care about this sport. Why the hell would mainstream America get involved in a sport that involves these sort of antics?

I've said it before and I'll say it again - they screwed the pooch on their execution of this event due to their spite.

Wasn't the 60 Minutes piece going to be about Derby City? If so, it will most likely end up as a filler segment with a quick mention of Shaw's new record sprinkled in. I do find it a bit humorous, that for all of the criticism of Schmidt's handling of his post-run marketing, we are now watching the hoopla associated with Shaw's run grow cold.

lmao -- you have no clue, I mean really zero, about what we want.

I had no idea that you were so knowledgeable about how "60 Minutes" production decisions were made.

Yeah, it's just going horribly -- ask Jayson how he feels about it, lol.

A stock GC 3 or 4 should not be an unreasonable replacement table, I think.
Those pockets are huge. Hard to make them much bigger.
