That is not 'the only way'. Long and short of it, the guy was an idiot for trying to make the pick.

No. He was attempting to salvage someone elses mistake. He should have tried the top pallet of the stack. You can manipulate those things pretty good if you've got experience. Careful manipulation of the tilt and side shift could've got that done, laborious but fun.

I drove fork for 5 years in a pallet warehouse. The odds that were stacked for recycling and the damaged pallets that repairers sent to the moldy piles made for some very tricky maneuvers trying not to tip a couple hundred pallets to the floor.

It's a horrible design for the racking. There should at the least be cross members. I bet you the changed a couple things after this incident.
