What's a Conservative Estimate of Cost

If you're there on the weekend, the rooms are way higher than that.

We're going to the ACS tourney next month and the Friday night room is $464. We can't get a Sat room there at the venue so we're looking elsewhere. We each got $1200 in winnings for the trip.

Flight $350
Rooms for 6 nights are about $800 each not counting Sat night which will be more than $200 per.
Food? $200?
Booze? My captain was going to drive so he could take all his beer with him. He has to fly so his cheap beer plans went down the drain.
Transportation? $100?

Approaching $1500 so far.

I miss the real Vegas.

The Rio isn't on the strip, so there are several options around. Just dining at the Rio you can feed yourself for a lot less than $100/day. You could also spend $200/day eating at the Rio if you require fancy meals and expensive drinks. This tournament is far better for players like me who use it as a vacation than it is for players who use it as income.
True, it is not on the Strip but very close. $100 was a conservative estimate for per diem food/drink. Your assessment is accurate although I found the food options at The Rio less than appealing. When I was there for BCA Nationals, we ate lunch there one day and every other day we went "off campus" for all meals.

Guess ACS didn't do a good job of negotiating rates. The rates I quoted were the player rates for The Rio straight from the player's guides for the events. The weekend rate was $149; $99 for weekdays.

It just seems strange that an event at a hotel wouldn't arrange enough rooms for the event at the hotel.

I'm sure there's a reason, but damn it makes me not want to go....or at least not play well next year during the tournament that we won this year. I'd rather have the second place $200 and stay home....to save money!

Parking was free there, and resort fee was optional. The coffee is super expensive there at Starbucks. And there is always 20 people in line.
My step daughter is a f&b director for sbux in a couple casinos. I’ve seen the p&l’s it’s crazy how much biz they do.

I left early

I was at the mirage getting the employee discount (connections) and parking was costing me as much as the room. In & out. Because I lived in Vegas so long I have a million people to see and go hang with, then going to the rio, Griffs etc. it just got stupid. So I left yesterday-also had important things to do in la. I’m done with vegas, they can keep their disease

The hotel math is a bit lite. Double it and you’ll have the correct number. Resort fees, parking, endless bullshit, $8 coffee……
No kidding. I was booking a room for this year's Mosconi Cup, and at "checkout" it was $550. At the final "pay", it was $1300. Like $75 a night for "taxes and surcharges". I canceled.

I wonder if there is another event in Vegas during the dates of the ACS event?

Agreed on the Rio food choices. I like the asian place right next to the sports book, the breakfast restaurant is good if you're looking for massive portions, and the Guy Fieri's place is just OK.

I was just out at the rio for the BCA nationals and it’s clear they’re only interested in doing the absolute bare minimum to keep that place operating.

  • Rooms are all run down and dirty. Broken fixtures in the rooms and in the hallways.
  • Lines to check in were out the door because they didn’t have enough people working the desk.
  • Half of the restaurants were on limited hours or closed all day except the weekends. Food prices were sky high. $6 for a can of Pepsi! They charged one lady $6 just for a cup of hot water. Not even coffee or tea, just hot tap water.
  • They even jacked the resort fee up another $5-10 to $40/night even though the pool wasn’t open every day and even when it was, only till 5pm. Plus all of the deck chairs and stuff they have out there are broken and basically unusable.
I’m hoping they move out of there when they can because it’s not worth paying strip prices for a place like the rio. I’ve never been to the apa event at the west gate but it certainly can’t be any of a worse venue than what the BCA/USAPL use.

The $99 published rate is not a full disclosure price.

Like I said 2X and you’ll have a accurate number. I was too lazy to go into detail. This post is very accurate and very informative. Well done!

The Rio is a dump. We left early the year we went to BCA Nationals because the accommodations were so poor and I vowed to never go back. Rumor has it a major renovation will be underway shortly after the BCA event to update all facets of the property. I hope they bring it into the 21st century or implode it and start over.

They are going to do a major reno, it needs it. It’s rough. Idk why they let it go downhill so bad. They did nothing along the way to keep it nice like Belligo does. It was a great property when I moved to vegas in 91. They expanded it 3 times I believe.

It’s shot now. Treasure Island is worse. Ran it until the wheels off it.

I was just at the Mirage and the retards working there were just painful. I decided to leave town. It’s just not worth the $ to stay there. And don’t worry I can afford it. But I’m not paying $200 for something worth $75.

The Mirage used to be THE place on the strip but I've not stepped foot in there in years. You are right, 30 years ago The Rio was the top option for staying "off Strip". Now it the place not to stay.

100% correct.

When a property is 33 years old-mirage it can’t compete with the new joints to be a top tier upscale property. That’s normal in vegas for 25-35 year old properties to go down a peg or two on their demographic average spend per customer. Same for Rio.

But to run a joint into the ground makes no sense to me

In my experience the Rio offers bad food at high prices. A half-mile walk gets you to much better options. But suppose you are about to have a match and you want a little snack. The food in the registration area was something like:

$4 small banana
$6 coffee
$6 donut
----------
$16 for pre-match snack

I decided to give the Rio as little of my food money as possible. I brought my own bananas.

Yup, It makes no sense. Hopefully they don't skimp on the renovations.
I don’t think they can.

Too many new joints that look real good. The WSOP can’t carry the joint all year round but it fills 10%-12% of the year and with pool they have another block of time accounted for.

The Riv lived off the pool, chess, backgammon, dart players for years and gun shows too. That was the life line that kept that joint alive. Rio seems to be following that marketing niche. A “events” hotel. Not a conference or trade show hotel-that’s Mandalay Bay/Luxor. Wynn & Belligo are upscale. Caesars is a shit box now as well.
