Funny observation about league players

A few years back I was talking to a gentleman at a league trnmnt. He is one of the better B players but was playing in the A division. I asked him why and his reply was somewhat funny. "The better B players are A players who drink to much. I would rather lose to a better player then a drunk."
Never played league but there are a lot of league players in my room
playing on the 7 footers.
The room is a BYOB so no bar but the one thing that I have noticed is that
it looks like they are having lot of fun and a lot of camaraderie in their society.

I wish I had a dollar for every "A" player that sandbagged and lost on purpose to go to the losers side in dbl elim tourney play. They do it for 2 reasons. First, they drop to play an "easier" crowd, and 2nd, it puts them under more pressure to win.
OR
They play the semi-pro and lose only to gain some nugget of knowledge/strategy to play them again in the final once they come through the 1 loss side.
Ask yourself: How many times do you see a good player lose the hot seat match only to come back through the 1-loss side and win the whole tourney??

Your "B" player playing the "A" crowd is truly playing to win.

All players miss balls and play poor shots. I don't believe there is any reality to this. You have to play good players no matter what, playing them on the A side is way better than playing them on the B side.

Perhaps you failed to realize the B player doesn't expect to win either division. He plays for the camaraderie and to spend time on the trnmnt tables prior to the team trnmnt

As for your other daydreams well to say I am skeptical would be factual.

Never saw the advantage of moving to the B side early. I never played much tournament pool but of the dozen or so tournaments I won I think I won two from the B side, and forfeited a third with a few balls to go. Aside from a lot fewer matches on the A side than going to the B side early, too easy to lose a short tournament race. The cushion of knowing that you can still survive from the B side lets you play more aggressively on the A side. You may have to play aggressively on the B side but one bad shot can end your event too.

I will take the A side anytime! As for the B players, I always figured they were number two and were probably trying harder! As a general statement B players have put some real work into their game but are still not where they want to be. They are hungry!

Hu

Would definitely rather stay on A side. Only possible benefit to B side, that I see, is you get to keep playing. Much less waiting.

Agreed, I'm there to win. If it's a short tournament the B side isn't horrible if you get put there because it does keep you busy and active but a larger tourney and you're playing all day long on the B side and by the end of the day you're tired and worn out. The A side player has been sitting most of the day so he's refreshed but is he focused? If he hasn't played in a while throw in some safe's early so he doesn't have a chance to get in stroke :)

Even great Pro-Player blow easy shots. I this this all the time watching U-Tubes.

Guess it is like someone sad everyone knows how many Home Runs Babe Ruth hit. But he also struck out many times.

I never met any tournament player who wants to go to the losers bracket early. I will tell you this, in larger one day events, the older one gets, you dread going to the losers bracket in round 1 or 2 - the climb uphill is just too grueling for an older player ( 55+). My goal at 68 is always to stay on the winner's side as long as possible to minimize the wear and tear of having to play too many matches one right after another.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 everyone misses, particularly non-elite good players who will occasionally play a shot that makes them look lile a rookie. Nobody deliberately loses to go to the losers side - it is better to go there late rather than early. Yes, there are those egos who say they are happy to be on the losers side after they get there, but this is ego - they were playing to win.

Double elimination gives the better players insurance but 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

What the hell is wrong with those people? Don't they know that pool is supposed to be serious??? 😄

I do not understand the excitment about a league, it is like second job. Got to be some place a certain day, or days of week.

Being retired many years two things I hate is rock solid schedule, and have long term commitments.

Use to like to do weekly Tournment, but only =if I was in the mood to do same.

There’s something to be said about Coco’s view.

Having a scheduled night is something to look forward to and something to dread at the same time. Given my very positive experience in the fall session as a player and a frustrating experience as a captain in the spring session, I’m going to see if I can regain my unbridled enthusiasm for this game by sitting out the summer session, practicing with no pressure at home, and maybe entering a local tournament here and there.

I hope I don’t regret it two-three weeks into the summer session.

Well as you age your body plays game with you, like Tuesday I spend that late afternoon, and until almost midnight in ED of Local Hospital.

No Dinner, Very uncomfortable Chair, did not get home until almost midnight. Dinner was at 0030 Wednesday, two Tortillas, with some Cheeze, Hot Sause, and a Beer. Got maybe four hour of sleep before Sun woke me up. Tried going to play pool Wednesday afternoon, felt like Zombie in Walking Dead.

Now it Friday still not 100%, so I sure would have hated to have to do something really important. Maybe tommarow might feel normal.

It's a lot easier than being a "pro" who has to turn up at tournaments whether he feels like it or not because potential ranking points or his sponsors dictate his schedule.

For many league players, it's their one night out each week and a break from the daily grind. Pool is the hook but it comes second. Good on them!

Dude maybe try a healthier diet. A dark room will also allow you to get some badly needed sleep. Sunshine can be great but it isn't when it wakes you up from 4 hours of sleep.

And for future reference ED is erectile dysfunction. ER is the emergency room. 😉

You assume something, you know nothing about, or detail of my life.

Make you look stupid, pretending to know, what you do not know.

Next time consult Magic 8 Ball.🤣
