Anyone here from Spain?

I’m taking my wife, well actually she’s taking me is more accurate, over to Spain in a few weeks. One week of the trip is already booked out and we have a few days with family in Palma, but we will have several days in Madrid to check out the culture. I’m sure we will hit plenty of the typical tourists spots but it got me thinking- are there any old famous snooker or billiard rooms? Yelp shows a few different ones available, but I’m hoping there’s someone on the site here that might have some local knowledge. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Come on. But I warn you, they’re making me go sailing for a week. Not sure there’s enough rum over there to keep me occupied.
No clue on billiards in Spain, but Spain & Portugal are absolutely unbelievable. Sounds like you have an amazing trip already, but if at all possible do not miss Barcelona. Even if you are not an art lover, the entire city and its amazing architecture is simply amazing. Absolutely my fav city on the planet and I’ve been to a lot of crazy places. I spent 3 yrs making lots of diving trips there and almost tanked my marriage trying to get my wife to move there. Smooth sailing!

I will go there for the first time, in October.
Last year was northern Italy. I found a couple of tables there that were very odd and interesting.

You will have a great time.

I'm from Ibiza. Are you looking for pool halls in Palma or Madrid?
My best chance to get a few hours to myself is in Madrid. My brother lives in Palma so we will be spending most of our time there but I doubt I can get a kitchen pass to sneak away for too long.

Is there anything in Madrid you'd recommend? Thanks for the reply. This is our first time over there but all of our kids have gone over and spent the summer at least once. They all loved Ibiza.

Also would like to know some spots in palma if anyone can help?

I assume you mean Palma de Mallorca?

I was living in Spain in the mid-80's and took a trip to the Balearic islands. I recall there was a very nice snooker parlor there. Gail and I were walking by and she suggested we go in. I'd played a little snooker here and there and the room was very nice with a number of 6x12's. So I start playing and the guy behind the counter asks if I'd like a game and I say, "Sure." Well, long story short, he starts whizzing balls in and running them from everywhere and I am totally out gunned. After a few frames he kinda sheepishly tells me he's the Irish amateur champ.

Don't know if the room is still there but if it is check it out. Just look out for the guy behind the counter.

Lots of billiard history in Spain.

Since your in the gram I'd ask Spanish champs Dani Sanchez, raul cuenca, esteve mata about rooms in Madrid

One of my favorite countries in the world.

Although I can’t comment on pool/billiards there, please, while in Madrid have dinner one night at Sobrino de Botin, one of the oldest restaurants In the world. Another favorite is Los Galayos for tapas.

You won’t regret either.

Just remember the culture, if you show up at 6pm for an early dinner at Botin, you’ll have to wait at least 3 hours until they open. 😁

Isn’t that the place that serves the baby pigs? My brother told me to go there too. Around here we think a place is old if it’s been open for 50 years, I think that place has been open since the mid 1700’s or so. That’s crazy to think…I’m not sure I can talk the boss into eating there but I will definitely have a glass of wine.

The suckling pig is phenomenal!

In 300 years, they’ve figured out how to do a decent steak too…

If it’s still allowed, a trip down to the wine cellar is also highly recommended.

Don’t ask her. Just tell her you’re taking your special girl to a special place for dinner and make it a surprise.

Yes!

Botin's is a must. I believe it claims to be the oldest restaurant in the world and was a favorite of Hemingway. It sits at the base of Plaza Mayor. Their roast suckling pig is wondrous, just salted and roasted in a wood fired oven. We once flew the owner out to Germany on a civic leader tour. A few months later I had a big group of friends that wanted to go to Botin's and when I walked in the owner gave me an embrace and wined and dined the group, complete with baby pig, a cava fountain, and souvenir sangria pitchers for everyone.

I have been back more recently and they are actually opening up earlier than in the old days to accommodate tourists. The Madrillenos still don't show up to dine until 10PM but regardless you need to make reservations weeks in advance.

They do love their pork in Spain. Simple food done perfectly.

Jamón Serrano for lunch…

You’ve talked me into it. Hopefully I can still get reservations.

Spain has lot of unique foods, olive oils, olives, and thing to do beside play Pool.

Honestly think the one thing I would work on before you leave is your Spanish.

Friend spent year there, and said had he not know Spanish. There were place he went were if you wand directions. No one would help if you only spoke English.
