1994 US OPEN VARNER VS REYES

I just got threw watching an Accu-stats copy of the 1994 US Open between Varner and Reyes a great match up and what a pleasure to watch! The match moved at the proper pace no taking of seemingly endless extension and slow play. These guys didn’t need time clocks. Also no continually wiping off of the cue ball, not once did the referee wipe off the ball and what a pleasure on the eyes to see green cloth on the tables. Of course it didn’t hurt having Billy and Johnny in the broadcast booth either.

What a difference from watching today’s robotic drones play with slow play and way too many calling of extensions rack after rack.
Just opinion of course,,,,,,

Is it available for the riff raff? I remember an interview with Efren where he named Varner as uh....... the toughest.

Blue cloth and milk drinkers aren’t as fun to watch.

Actually, I’ve been wondering about pro drinks. It seems that all current pros are only drinking bottled water. I understand its a sport, importance of hydration etc, but does no one ever drink gatorade, soda, tea, coffee, or god forbid a beer? Not even sparkling water? Is it a stipulation in pro events, a sponsor thing, or what?

Idk good question.

I always used to drink water. I almost never drink alcohol and play(maybe 1 time a year). Red Bull rarely if I’m tired.

Happy 4th

seen filler drink gatorade.

who was the last person to drink beer at the tv table in the US open? there's a match with mccready in the early 00's sneaking beer sips behind the audience divider, but i mean openly

I’m surprised there are not more bath room breaks with all the water they consume but then again they’re all still fairly young!

Well if I ever make it to the TV table I will have a Dunkin by my side. Water sucks! I think one of the WPA rules is no alcohol during play. Not sure on the other platforms.

But still. I was wondering the same thing as you. It’s always bottled water. What about a soda? Maybe they are drinking straight vodka.

I saw Steve Mizerak drink a Miller Lite one time when he was just showing off.
Thanks for the nostalgia reminder which prompts me to provide that here as a holiday treat for all AZBers:

That clever, skillful performance by the Miz (after 38 takes for the fussy video director) incrementally increased interest in the game in all segments of the population -- and greatly enhanced Miz's fame and recognition in all Anglophonic countries and elsewhere.

Arnaldo ~ A pure delight to again see the power of the Miz's magnetic personality, good humor, and his devilishly charming so-characteristic grin when his playfully ribbing self was on display everywhere he went.

Here is a cool post from the comment section under the video:

"I knew him as Mr. Mizerak. My second grade spelling teacher. He told us he would be famous. He was the nicest man and teacher in Perth Amboy grammar school grade 6. He made us always laugh in class and believe in ourselves. God bless him. My favorite teacher. My cousin played him. Mizerak won. Small world."

How'd they play so good? I mean, green cloth? Wood shafts? The weird ball colors?

Larger pockets and bad racking making the 9 on the break several times a match. Also cheap light ball sets. I saw some of the matches from ESPN and I would complain about that equipment in a pool hall as sub standard.

If you look at the average TPA, including what the pro pool announcers talk about, you used to be able to win tournaments with a .900+, now to win just a match you need to shoot like a .920 or .930. The standard for play is higher these days.

I love watching the older matches but I don't kid myself that the old school players could outshoot the modern group of guys day in and day out, the modern games just needs too much consistency to keep competitive.

I think that’s actually a conservative estimate. I’ve noticed watching a lot of older pro matches that top pros would snap off tournaments with TPA’s in the mid and even low .800’s. There is no doubt that the overall level of play has increased dramatically- but thats true of all sports… I played competitive tennis for a few years as a kid and am amazed how hard & accurate people routinely hit balls these days…

The tennis rackets have gotten much better, for power and control. The newer players (casual) have a lot more power due to that. Also the server is a huge weapon now like the break, you got 6 foot tall guys serving at speeds that were silly to talk about in the 90s. I have an old Prince that used to be a mainstay of a lot of pro players, and the thing can barely keep stable playing with even medium level players now. I had to go to a widebody newer frame to keep up and keep my arm from being shaken apart hehe. Skiis also, I think much more so than pool cues over the years.

It's funny but along with the break in pool I wish some sports would try to limit the effectiveness of a serve, and in baskeball limit the damn penalty shooting. It seems these days half the scoring is off penalty shots. Make good play great again LOL I think that is why I enjoy hockey more than the other sports, it relies on good play more than a single overwhelming shot or trying to draw fouls (although some teams make it an art to goad players into a fight to get a power play).
