Yes!

It’s not meant as a insult or a knock.

I respect the new generation.

I just think it’s kinda funny to contrast the different eras of pool.

Larger pockets and bad racking making the 9 on the break several times a match. Also cheap light ball sets. I saw some of the matches from ESPN and I would complain about that equipment in a pool hall as sub standard.

If you look at the average TPA, including what the pro pool announcers talk about, you used to be able to win tournaments with a .900+, now to win just a match you need to shoot like a .920 or .930. The standard for play is higher these days.

I love watching the older matches but I don't kid myself that the old school players could outshoot the modern group of guys day in and day out, the modern games just needs too much consistency to keep competitive.
As in all sports things change from generation to generation and people will always be arguing about who was bettter than whom. It’s true that the pockets were way too big and all the old players complained about it back then, I’m glad to finally see the pockets being tightened up a bit. The new age player have the advantage of the templet racks virtually assuring balls on the break every time. The old player had the old wooden rack which produced lots of dry breaks which tended to push their numbers down I suspect.

The game of nine ball is way too slow and too boring with the slow pace of play with today’s players. Players examining every shot 14 ways to Sunday, then taking an extension and re-examining it again then finally taking a shot. I hope Matchroom and Predator can find a solution to this, because this will not cut with the average TV viewers in my opinion.

Bingo...the older games were played "fast and loose"...which to my mind is what 9 ball should be.

Yeah they look like PGA golfers looking at a 5 foot put for what seems like forever.
Personally I think golfers and pool players that take forever to execute a shot is a result of fear and nerves.

I think that’s actually a conservative estimate. I’ve noticed watching a lot of older pro matches that top pros would snap off tournaments with TPA’s in the mid and even low .800’s. There is no doubt that the overall level of play has increased dramatically- but thats true of all sports… I played competitive tennis for a few years as a kid and am amazed how hard & accurate people routinely hit balls these days…

✌️
meh the highly polished balls with super slick cloth and magic racks make 9ball breaking a breeze today, the balls just go all over, takes but the slightest stroke to get the rock moving all over the table

Except the old 9 ball rules called for behind the line on fouls and all balls spotted up, at least on the break and the two pushout rule for sure slowed things down. Not quite as fast and loose as now aside from maybe players smacking balls randomly more often 20 years ago which I don't think is much of a good thing if that is what "fast and loose" was, less care taken is not usually a benefit.

I think it's more about care and trying to not make a mistake, taking the time to figure out the best and correct way to play something vs just breezing through whatever you come up with first. Some players can get away with just shooting whatever quickly, but I don't usually equate playing slow to being bad or "not playing properly". There are those that are slow because they are bad and just are not sure, and there are those that are slower because that is how they learned to be deliberate and focused. Ralph Soquet is no more nervous than Earl when playing I'm sure, but their play style is very different.
