Balls in the way? Nah..

I think a carom is any ball glancing off any other, in this case the CB off the OB.

Which makes me wonder: is the OB's movement also a "carom" even though it wasn't moving before the collision?

I understand what you are saying.

It does remind of the ? If your aunt has .....

Really nice out but didn't see a carom.

Carom off the object ball where he hit it at the speed it took off at an angle to avoid the first ball and to change the angle. Thought it was a nice clear example of an advanced technique because you can see the cueball take a different curving path due to the speed of the hit and the spin used. Plus, the direction of the hit to avoid the other balls and speed to get to the shot at a good angle, overall one of the better position plays out there I thought.

Since it's going off a direct strike of the cueball to the pocket, don't think we can call it a carom, but there is a "carom angle" that ball takes so it's still somewhat there. Really any collision between two balls is a carom, but we only call a shot a "carom shot" when the ball hits of another ball then does something else. In this case, the cueball caromed off the object ball and curved into the path it went on through the rails. The ball it made was not called a "carom" since it took the direct line to the pocket without hitting anything. I did not call it a "carom shot" but rather a carom off the ball, which seemed to cause confusion.

A punch stroke with english to redirect the cue ball around the 4.
The lanes were open, not that congested, is was just a matter of a nice clean stroke with the spin.
Not a miracle or jaw dropping feat. Normal stuff in 3 cushion to redirect and delay the cue ball.
Good stroke by Mike, it's ashame he's not playing.

I think the first ball only needs to change direction off the second ball - nothing else needs to happen to call it a carom.

Much simpler explanation that what I had hehe (y) Change of direction off the other ball, so cueball traveling to the object ball changes direction off that ball = carom. Object ball not changing direction off the contact (except in I guess a pure physics sense), not a carom.

I think that's right - but I'm still not certain about the OB...

pj <- maybe a philosophical question...

That's what I mean about it being a physics question. Motion is just energy, a pool ball sitting still has potential energy. Once it's hit, that energy is now the energy of motion, so in a pure physics nerd blackboard numbers way, the energy the cueball has always had was just redirected into motion, thus a carom. But I would not want to call that action a carom, since we would be called every shot a "carom" shot and that would get confusing and annoying.
