Coming Back after 20 Years Off

Please forgive me if I ask redundant questions. I've spent the past couple days reading the boards, but haven't made any progress into what I'm looking for, which is; a new cue.

I sold my Rick Howard cue (on here actually), that he made for me back in 1998. It's a decision I regret constantly. I've tried reaching back out to him, but I think he's closed up shop. If I were to look for similar cue makers, or even used custom cues, who should I look at now? I'm looking for something simple, even a well crafted sneaky would work.

I appreciate any thoughts,

q

Way too many cue makers out their today. And from what i see, a ton of them do some nice work.

I find it harder to find simple cues, everyone wants to do a bunch of fancy inlays.

Bottom line starts with on how much do you want to spend?

I think that's the problem I'm running into, is there are a lot of good cue makers out there. If I was looking for simple, plain w/o inlays I'd be under the 1k mark. Nice craftmanship, simple 4/6 points I'd probably double that.

I might take a look at the Rick Howard in the marketplace, but really want a simple cue that has a solid hit (like my old 88/89 joss).

I think there are a lot of us out there who don't care to put inlays in cues. I used to do some by hand (not pantograph). Doesn't really float my boat now. Won't do cnc because it looks machine made.

I really don't understand a lot of these fancy inlaid cues. My Richard Black cue of 20 years is a plain four pointer. I just replaced it with a no point Joss. Looking for an upgraded to that and what i'm looking for is another 4 pointer.

I get it. Not for me, but neither are lowriders. I can appreciate it all.

I'm the same way, hence my specs. I had an old 88ish Joss stolen way back in the day, never seen one like it.

A very nice cue with decent lead time? ......
Jerry Terbrock
I'd guess a plain cue would run $700 give or take a CNote or 2?

Thanks, but I don't take orders, really, and am in the process of building equipment to replace what I gave away so I can make cues again.

I basically do it as a hobby with no intention of making money. Most of the cues I've sold were for the cost of materials or less.

I think you need to consider the matter of how well you plan to take care of any cue you buy. I always advise those who, like me, are a bit careless when it comes to maintaining their equipment, not to spend a lot of money on a cue. I think a Joss, a Schon or a Meucci might be a good starting point.

Nice point. The exact reason I started buying good sunglasses and pens. The cheap ones that I didn't care about were costing me a fortune in loss and breakage.

I've had my fair share of cues, and am not careless. That being said, if I was dragging around a 10k cue, things might be different. It's actually part of the fun of having something nice.

There is now a nice Ned Morris cue on Ebay. Very seldom seen for sale. His cues are among the very best for workmanship and playability.
