Well they no Press is bad Press. Use to watch 60 Minutes until some of old guard died off.

In positive some people still watch 60 Minutes, and the Shaw store could spark interest in Pool.

Question is how can the Pool world capitalize on the free publicity?

If they ask him how big were the pockets I will shoot my TV.

Well reporters are not topic experts at every story they cover.

Also 60 Minutes audience is only small percentage of people who even know what Pool is.

A couple of thought's first is that this is better to have on than to not have it is not rocket science here. Second Moscoini’s name will most likely appear in it where John Schmidt’s may not, wouldn’t surprise me. And lastly as far as it being some kind of
‘bump’ for pool if anyone believes that I’ve some good beach front property in Arizona to sell you! I remember some years back 60 minutes did a thing featuring UJ Puckett that was of casual interest at best.

If Jayson had a book to sale, it would measure the effectiveness of a CBS story to translate into sales. It is a lot easier to order a book online than it is to visit a pool room or pool event.

Jayson has matured the most and it shows in his communication.

I worked closely with the 60 Minute producers on putting this piece together. Spoke with one of them yesterday and Lou is correct on the air date this Sunday, unless it gets pre-empted by some late breaking news story. Rare but it happens. The piece will be twelve minutes long and Shane will be the focus of it. They found his story to be the most compelling and went with it. I spent a long time with them at DCC and also at their studio in New York, but got cut out of the live show. Shit happens! But I'm glad to be part of something that may give our sport a boost. They will also be focusing on the professional side of the game. I did my best to steer them away from the gambling aspect, but they did find that interesting I'm afraid. Couldn't help but be aware of it at DCC. I'm excited to see what they put together. I found the two producers (both women) to be very insightful and thoughtful.

If I told you how I understand I would be sharing secret info for no reason.

You think average American is knowledgeable about Pool, I think not.

I believe this will be a nice bump for pool.

Probably the biggest beneficiaries will be the DCC and people who were unaware of it now wanting to go, and Shane and Jayson's rooms. From there, maybe there will be guys that decided to blow the dust off the pool cue they have in the closet and go to their local bar or pool room. Or maybe just a small fraction of 1% of those 10 million viewers think: I used to love to play pool. Maybe it's time to buy a pool table for the house -- that's thousands of pool tables being bought.

It's all good.

I'm not interested in sand in Arizona but I do still believe this will be a bump for pool.

According to the interweb "60 Minutes" is in the top five in all three demographics with 10.20 million viewers. Consider that the average cost of a 30 second ad on "60 Minutes" is about $130,000. Jay says the piece will be 12 minutes long. That's $3,120,000 worth of free advertising for pool on a highly rated and viewed television program.

I call that a win.

We have been contacted by CBS and advised that the segment on Jayson's 14.1 high run record will air this Sunday, Dec 4.

Now, having worked with TV folks before, I feel confident in saying that while that is the plan on Monday, by Sunday something crazy could have happen -- I don't know... like a volcano erupting -- that could pre-empt their piece on Jayson. But that would be pretty far fetched so should we should be good to go.

LOL, let's hope that isn't the one you're talking about.

While I don't watch much 60 minutes anymore, I also think this is really great news for pool, and really look forward to seeing it. You don't have to be knowledgeable about pool to enjoy watching something like this. Think of all of the people that play in leagues, bar leagues, college campuses, or just a friendly game at a bar when out. Then also, consider all the homes that have pool tables that are mainly used once or twice a year for parties. When we go to our summer place, one of the corner bars that we go to has a pool table that is most always being used, knowledgeable pool players, no, just an average mix of people young to old, that are having fun. This is really great to see.

One of my favorite pool books of all time is Running The Table: The Legend Of Kid Delicious and the reason it's a favorite is that it is written magnificently. Who wrote it was the mega talented then head sports writer for Sports Illustrated, L. Jon Wertheim. Has anyone noticed that he is now a 60 Minutes correspondent? He's shown at the start of each episode - I'm wondering if he had anything to do with this story; he is their sports guy...maybe Jay or Lou could comment on this. If he is involved it would be more reason for optimism, imo.

Very happy this is being aired and kudos to all you guys who had a hand in making this happen.

We were told today that the DCC along with historical footage will be included. The crew went to DCC and that's where I 1st spoke to the producers. They also went to South Dakota and Jaysons Billiard room in Connecticut. Should be a nice piece for pool. They get millions of viewers. The delay was because they have been covering the Ukraine/Russia war. I hope it doesn't get delayed again.
After 2 years CBS just found out that Hunter biden lap top is real that could be another delay

Years back Morley Safer did a piece on Jackie Gleason which had several clips of him playing pool along with the stories of him acting, hosting his own TV variety show, etc. He was often referred to as "The Great One", and at the end of the segment Safer asked Gleason's opinion of that description. Without missing a beat Gleason asked "You just saw me shoot pool, didn't you?"

Well I find it interesting 60 Minutes is getting 130K for a 30 second ad.

It also saw something about the demographic of their average viewer.

Hope after the show the spot in archived so people who find out after the fact, can view.

Jon had EVERYTHING to do with this story! He and I began talking about doing a piece on the sport of pool in 2019. He told me he was working on it and then the pandemic hit, so it got put on hold for two years. In early December 2021 Jon called me and said I would be getting contacted by one of the producers of the show. She called me a couple of days later and we talked for some time. She inquired when there would be an event where they could meet the players. It was right before Turning Stone and too late for that, so I suggested DCC since I suspected all the top players would be there. She asked me who should they meet and I suggested Shane, Dennis and Filler first off as three of the best current players. I also told her about Jayson's feat in beating the historic record of Mosconi.

We talked several times during the next month or so and they asked me to meet them at DCC to guide them around. They paid all my expenses, God bless them. I intro'd them to many of the top players there and they did quite a bit of filming the proceedings, even going upstairs to the Action room. They also focused on the important matches going on in the Accu-Stats arena. As you know Dennis was not able to make it to DCC, so he got scrubbed from the show. Jon was not able to make it to DCC due to other committments, but he was the one that later conducted interviews with Shane, myself and some of the other players. The Producers (Kaylee and Natalie) also did some of their own interviews in Jon's absence.

I made it clear from the beginning that I did not want to take part in a "hit" piece on pool and they assured me that the gist of the story was about the professional aspect of the game. I shared with them how our sport was growing exponentially with all the new events and increased prize money. That first month (January of this year) Fedor Gorst won over 90K and for me that was proof of what I was telling them. I flew to New York in late February and was interviewed by my old friend Jon W. for over three hours, where we talked about everything it seemed. He did try to draw me out on my gambling episodes but I was reluctant to talk too much about that stuff. I felt that the focus should remain on the the sport itself and how it was growing as a pro sport. I did share with him that gambling matches did still take place but for the top players the major tournaments were much more important. There was good money to be made (with little risk) and a lot of prestige which can lead to sponsorship opportunities. The top players were actually beginning to make a real living as pro pool players!

I have absolutely no control over what they decide to air from over a hundred hours of taping, but my hunch is it will be good for pool. 60 Minutes always does quality reports and what I observed was high quality and integrity in everything they were doing. They requested that I ask permission from the high rollers before filming them playing upstairs. If either one said no then they took a pass.

There's probably more I could add to this, but just like you I'm looking forward to seeing the final version that goes on the air. For someone like me who has tried to grow the sport for decades I'm enthused by what I see tournament wise and by the increased interest from major media sources like 60 Minutes. Maybe we will see the day when there is real money to be made in pool and it is accepted as a major sport. Now that would be cool and I could rest easy.

P.S. I shared with them about the long ago 60 Minutes piece on UJ Puckett and how he and Harry Reasoner from 60 Minutes became fast friends during the shoot and for a long time afterwards. They went into the archives and found the story and told me how much they enjoyed it.

Lou, don’t misunderstand me I sincerely hope that this does something good for pool it’s just that with so many years of hopes being dashed, I can‘t help the skepticism. Let’s all keep our fingers crossed…
