gambling promotes pool see here.

Thst

That’s exactly my point. An individual who struggles to make money will find gambling more attractive. That will of course be true in any country. But it scales better in poorer areas. That was the situation in the Philippines where Dennis Orcullo could make more as a pool player than as a fisherman. I couldn’t possibly make more money as a pool player than what I do now, not unless I was a top 5 player.
My wife was in our pool room talking with Efrin, (early 80s) he had a guy who would help him he didn't speak very good English. They were at that time used to playing for about $2.00 a game in the Philippines and that money would support them.
This is an quote. They heard about playing pool in the US. It's funny, someone said. "In America they only use nine balls AND THEY BET MONEY". Of course referring to the fact that they grew up playing 15 ball rotation. That really cracked us up.

Pool referred to the pool of money bet on the game before it referred to the game. Just to say that gambling and pool have a very long history together. I think one thing that has damaged pool is the ready access to gambling, particularly the gambling that doesn't take years to learn or require much effort.

Some people will never be highly skilled but they can always hope to get lucky.

yes pool gambling got hurt by the proliferation of casinos and internet gambling.

and hurt by the internet as younger people enjoy doing internet games more than going out and playing at a business and socializing.
luckily there are tons of fun players nowadays to keep it alive. that's good.
