Quitting Winners Question

Most of you don't get it because you probably think exclusively about the money and not about the pride in one's game, reputation and honor. Literally anyone can get a set/game ahead and run away. There's not much to it. That's pathetic. It's also cowardice and an admission you're not confident you can reproduce this. If you're this desperate for a few bucks, maybe pool gambling isn't for you. There's more to gambling in pool than just cash. You should only quit when behind or even.

There's no glory in quitting as a winner. The idea is to not only win, but to have the loser concede this by them quitting. To beat them down where they want no more. Get them to say mercy, or cry uncle or tap out. So long as they keep wanting a piece of you, if you're ahead - you should play. This is the only way to prove you're the true winner since it is unanimous. Your opponent confirms it, not you alone. When you quit ahead, you're just declaring yourself winner. This is the equivalent of when you were a child and some kid in the middle of a game or arbitrarily just declares themselves winner like some brat. When opponents quit when behind, they agree with you and confirm you the winner. It's that simple. Surprised so many people don't understand this basic concept.

The fundamental difference is in defining what the "game" is ...the quit while ahead types think the game is literally the set or whatever they won and ran away with. The quit only when even or behind crowd believes the "game" is the struggle and contest between two people facing off, regardless of the games/sets. The "game" doesn't end with the completion of a rack or a set, it ends when the loser has had enough.

If my buddy shows up and I wanted to play with him, the opponent's lack of courtesy and scene making may have worked in letting him off the time payout, I would have even paid the time and told him it was to shut him up.

it certainly did not uphold his honor. Unless his goal was to be a total whiner, then he is indeed Lord of the Karens.

Guys like him are worldbeaters when they play alone, and that's all he will end up getting, people don't like playing with spoiled children.

I think most would agree it is bad etiquette to quit first when up $ on a guy you are gambling with. If not chime in plz. But, in a recent situation I witnessed, 2 guys were playing for basically nothing (table rate) and the guy that won the first set preferred to play a friend who arrived and quit. The other guy was very upset by him quitting winners on him, saying it should be at least 2/3 and it doesn't make a difference if they are gambling or not. Does he have a case or just sour grapes?
A non issue for the $ amount they were playing for, but the honorable thing for the guy who quit in this situation would be to offer to split the table time, if that’s all they were playing for. Life is too short to get upset over little stuff like this.

Especially when you consider how few regular opponents you have access to.

You gotta provide good customer service. Or you will kill your action.

Now if people want to get aggressive and bet angry...great. That's fun too.

If you don't mind I would like to play my friend, maybe we can pick this up later or another day.
We can finish the set if you like and I insist on paying the ticket.
I'm paying that ticket whether it's $5.00 or $25.00, win or lose.

I couldn't help wondering how the person who he was currently playing was approached, a question you seem to have too. One approach might get easy acceptance, another anger. I had a family member I was trying to train to work the sales counter. Problem was this included telephone sales and he came across as angry to a lot of people, particularly when they couldn't see his expression. He wasn't nonstop angry, more like abrupt.

To have anyone get upset over such a minor matter it would seem there was some miscommunication somewhere at the pool hall. I used to walk by a man's desk on my way to mine every morning for a year or so. I always bade him good morning and asked how it was going. I knew what his words would be, they never varied. "Great, just great."

What he put into the words could be anywhere between, "Great, just great! It's Spring! Birds are singing, butterflies everywhere, perfect weather! Wonderful day! Life is fantastic!" and "Great, just great. I wish I could have died last week to not have to face this day" With his face hanging like a huge jowly dogs. His face could also register an endless variety of expressions in between. I didn't care a bit about his day but I was always amazed that he could convey an endless array of feelings with those same three words.

It's amazing the amount of feel and info you can pick up from a few words, facial expressions, and eye movement.

I don't gamble partly because of this stupid 'etiquette'. You'd be a moron to consider yourself a money player and consider letting an opponent work his way back to even.

Those two are mutually exclusive.

Thanks for all the replies folks. Some entertaining stuff. So I was back there last night and the young guys are still talking about it so I got more details than what I overheard on my smoke break with the 2 players in question. It's actually way worse on the old guy than I thought.
It was explicitly stated before starting that they would play just 1 frame of snooker as he waits for his buddy to play pool. The frame was a 45min grind and dude was already waiting for him a bit. And guy was acting like the pool player had no class and 'all you pool players have no ethics' yada yada, get off my lawn type stuff. Hasn't been back since and prior to that I dunno if I ever been in there without him present. Guy just loves the game. I guess like one or 2 guys who posted above, he plays for the honor and us lowly gamblin pool players will just never get it :p.

Sounds like the snooker player has got his lines out and is just waiting on a fish to bite now. Not sure why he would disappear unless you just happened to miss him. Funny thing about snooker that it took me awhile to realize, with all of the reds in a pile and the corner pockets six feet apart the game relates to barbox better than it does to big track pool.

A local small time hustler stayed with me a few days. By then the snooker table was feeling a little lonely so I loaded him up and we took a ride. At first he was in bad need of some coaching which I gave him. After about forty-five minutes he was making a few balls. A couple hours later I hauled him to a bar with typical Valley boxes. He was the first to get into action. The other guy broke and then Rod had his first shot since leaving the snooker table. He shot and looked over at me with a big grin on his face. I just said "Yeah" and went back to my business. He didn't need telling what he had already been shown.

Playing for time is well into sociable pool. Bailing on the guy was rude. (I've also been the rude guy) People are shallow.

Now if he had bar rules action, that's another thing...

If playing for big money like 0ne or two dollars a rack, win or lose bla bla, who cares, many might not even know you guit...

Gambling involves ’risk’. That’s the appeal. Some people get angry if you quit winner. I get angry when someone quits because they didn’t win the first game. If a friend quits on you, you know it’s probably not greed. If you feel insulted when a stranger quits winner, then you likely won’t play them again. If you can’t accept ALL the risks without crying, then you shouldn’t gamble (‘eyes wide open’).

I play cheap one pocket on Saturday mornings.
I can play from 10 AM to 2 PM or so before I'm tired and need to stop(I'm 75).
If I'm up a couple games or so I just say I'm done and we will put the games I'm ahead on the wire for next time.
I don't play to make a little score,I just want to play and would rather not play for fun but I will if there's no option.

I'm thinking that grilledsneeze cat ate lead paint as a kid.

Sour grapes from my perspective. I don’t play for table time and I don’t expect others to pay for my time if I win. But if I am playing a better player and lose most of the games/sets, I pay for the time as a courtesy. I want that player to play me again.

I don’t gamble. But I don’t consider table time or playing for less than it would cost to enter a local tournament or weekly league fees to be gambling. Usually, I get a lot more playing time in with $5 sets of 9-ball than I get playing one set of 8-ball on league night.

if you play for time or buy a lottery ticket you are gambling. and no matter how you want to rationalize it and put down those that bet more is
certainly being inconsistent.
i bet lots but dont put down those that dont. but when they put down a gambler and are gambling on things themselves they are nothing more than hypocrites.

this is not directed at any particular person.
