re dye linen wrap?

Posted this in the ask the cue maker forum and got one answer(thanks) so maybe here I'll get some more?

if the linen wrap is almost white can you re dye it with a magic marker to a darker color?
or is there a better way?
 
I assume you are talking about changing the color of a wrap that is already installed. If so I would think it would be hard to get a consistent, and/or, consistent color and amount of penetration if for no other reason than just considering that there is a certain amount of glue absorbed in the linen when it was originally installed.

All that said, unless there is some reason to preserve the original wrap on the cue at all costs, well then just try it. At worst it's $5 worth of linen and 30 minutes or so to rewrap it with your preferred color if it doesn't work out. I would think dying the new linen before installing would yield a much better result, but like I said, it's a cheap experimint.

Dying fabric requires hot water and stirring the last time I used some.
 
There is a better way.
Send it to Proficient Billiards for a re-wrap. It's not that expensive and will be trouble free, tight and right.
Consider a refinish at the same time if it's all dinked up. If you don't think it is worth the cost of at least a re-wrap, toss it in the closet and get a cue that would be worth it if it DID need one!

Just re wrap it. A magic marker recolor would be LESS then extremely amateurish. Any other way of dying it would involve lots of moisture. No need to go into detail what that could do to your cue.
 
White thread should respond to food/water colors. If a stain is not enough, use less water. I think application method would be the operative criterial - wipe on or spritz etc... Other types of wood working dyes might work as well.

Where are you buying your linen?

I agree with your advice, but I'm paying twice that for 50 yards, or one cue's worth. I don't mind as I will never use an entire spool of one color. But if you know of a source for $5 to do one cue, I'm all ears.

If I buy 1 pound rolls, which I do in popular colors I can do a wrap for like 2 bucks. Single rolls like you mentioned are now $6.50,,,,,,,,, I haven't bought single rolls in years.

Ship it to Seyberts, for 45 dollars plus shipping new wrap of any color.
Check their website, custom cue wraps. They do quality work QUICKLY

Am I understanding this correctly? Is there a problem paying for $10 worth of thread to re wrap a cue? Jesus.... I got flamed and basically called a cheap badtard for refusing to pay $25 for a single cube of chalk!

Yes, but a high-end builder recently got roasted for doing this, the black dye was coming off on people's hands.

I said I don't mind. But if I can buy the same product for 50%, why wouldn't I or any reasonable person.

What I comprehend is you arguing (discussing if that's what you want to call it) with someone over 5 measly bucks for some friggin string.
