Premier League Pool (PLP) 6-13 March2023, Leicester- Earl makes his debut !

Sanjin is the unlikely leader after 3 days
After losing his first match, he is on 8 match winning streak beating favorites like FSR, Albin. Now on course to break the longest 10 match winning streak by Albin last year.

Only halfway? Feels like they've been playing for weeks.
Anyone notice the constant noise of balls going down the ball returns in the background? They must have practice tables in the same area with ball returns as opposed to the drop pockets on these 2 match tables. A little soft background music would be nice to eliminate that distraction.

Does anyone know if these are 4-1/4 inch or 4-1/2 inch corner pocket Diamonds? They appear forgiving, but with new cloth it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference. With the length of this tournament, if they are not changing the cloth on these match tables after the various stages, the pockets will start playing considerably tougher, particularly if they are 4-1/4” corners.

Nice to hear Imran Mahid commentating. He is possibly the best commentator on Eurotour events and is one of the most elite commentators in the game. Matchroom seems to have a near monopoly on the good commentators.

What makes a good pool commentator? I did not get to hear much of Imran but what does he do that makes him top tier commentator in our sport?

Cost
Prizemoney $100K ...
Looks like they reduced the prize money this year to $97,500 from last year's $100,000, with the cut being entirely from the 2nd place prize ($12,500 last year, $10,000 this year).

[And an oddity -- On Matchroom's "League Table" for last year they have the money for 1st and 2nd places reversed, with the $20,000 prize going to Filller when Ouschan actually won it. Filler had the best round-robin record but finished 2nd after the playoffs.]

I had the chance to watch some of this over the last couple of days, and really enjoyed it. The thing that I found most interesting, to me, was that I decided that I enjoyed the FSR/Woodward match more than the Ouchin/Shaw match, and after I thought about it, I decided that it was because it wasn't "perfect pool". They played safes, got out of line occasionally, had to jump to get out of the safety and/or position issues...and they both did so incredibly well. Compared to the Ouchin/Shaw match where they pretty much broke and ran, unless they scratched on the break, then the other guy ran it out.

It was all good stuff tho, and I was happy to be able to watch it. Just let me see them have to work for it occasionally ;)

Day 4 of 5 complete for the first round robin.

8 points will qualify for top 10. 7 points may require tiebreaker (I think racks difference first followed by racks won, then head to head matches)

That means these 8 players in danger of elimination and fighting for 5 spots in final day 5 of stage 1 tomorrow:LOL:

Thankfully, the scores carry forward and every match counts, even in Stage 1.

Ignoring the dead money (Strickland, two ladies and a junior), we always knew that ten of the other twelve would advance to Day 6, so the significant casualties will be few in Stage 1. In Stage 2, however, every match will be in doubt.

Shane in a little trouble here and needs to find some form or he'll miss the semifinals. FSR and Shaw look like locks to me for the semis, and it looks like they'll be joined by at least one Cinderella when they get there.

This event gets really good on Day 6 and will build to an exciting crescendo. It's a very good event with a great format.

This is one of my favorite events as well. Is Day 6 tomorrow (Friday)?

Yes, hard to believe that Shane is 6–6 and needs to win two of his final three matches tomorrow to advance for sure. He appears to be playing pretty good but just making some critical errors, as he did today in his match against FSR, and in these short races that’s all it takes. It was a great match with very few mistakes, but at 3–4 with an open rack, Shane tried to power in a 4 ball at warp speed, which rattled on him, and that was it.

Tomorrow his matches are Sep, Earl and Sanjin. He has a good chance of making the cut but IMO he has to do better to make the next round.

In my opinion, these rather receptive pockets are resulting in some sloppy shots going in, which is certainly not advantageous for the top players.

After this many days of competition and the pockets still playing this forgiving, these can’t be any tighter than 4-1/2 inch pockets, unless they are recovering these match tables every couple days which I doubt, because the reverse spin seems to be grabbing pretty well off these cushions, which would be impossible on 1–2 day old cloth.

To update this post, JJ stated on today’s telecast that these are 4-1/4 inch pockets, which would make them the most forgiving 4-1/4” pockets I’ve ever seen, I can only guess due to the new cloth.

No, Shane beat Earl on Day 3. It's Juszczyszyn he plays Friday, probably a tougher task.

On Day 5, you can tell that the cloth is a little more worn and the equipment is playing tougher. As we approach the business end of this event, this is good to see.
