Snooker cues

Snooker cues are quite a bit different from pool cues. Here's a clip of the two common types. The player on the left has a one-piece cue, the type that seems to be the most popular among the top players. The player on the right has a jointed cue, but the joint is not in the middle. It divides the cue into roughly 2/3 shaft and 1/3 butt. The ferrules are typically brass although titanium is used by a few.

Note the tip protector on the cue on the left. Seems more useful than a joint protector.

great clip bob
any idea why the 2 piece cues are not divided 50/50?

Tradition. Wood 1/2 jointed cues were more prone to damage when they hit the ball hard. 3/4 jointed wood cues were far less prone. With modern joints, there is pretty much no difference. 1/2 jointed are far easier to carry around than 3/4 jointed but tradition dictates.....

??? Really? I've played with a 1/2 (50/50) snooker cue all my snooker playing life and this has never happened.

I have actually heard players say their beard hair gets caught in the joint and pulled. Owie.
Allison Fisher said she would carry extra makeup or face cream since the cue would be rubbing it off from her chin.

In my stance with a 50/50 cue 58 inches long, I notice the small uneveness in the joint on my chin (or did when I could get down that low). Maybe your arms and cue and bridge are not the same lengths as mine.

50/50 will put the joint under the chin. Snooker players typically have their chin rubbing on the stick during the shot.
It may also be that the regular butt of the cue can then be changed for a longer butt, which is effectively an extension. If the 50/50 cues had the longer butt you would need a longer case.

I heard one snooker player talk of carbon fiber ferrules. Does that make the cue low deflection?, brass is heavy.

Intersting! Did Allison Fisher actually play for some time with a 1/2 snooker cue? Or was she referring to when she switched to pool and at first used a 1/2 pool cue with her snooker stance?

Mine is a 1/2 cue 57 inches long. My snooker stance is definitely intuitively different to my pool stance but maybe they are not too different from each other. This might go someway to explaining why I am "ok" at both games without excelling at either one 🤣

I don't know the exact details, I just remember her talking about it. It may have been one of those "what's in the bag" interviews and they asked her about the makeup kit or something like that. It's more of how low she gets on the stance and the cue actually rubs on her face, I don't think the type of cue is a factor for her.
