this is apparently a tournament the asian WPA sub-federation rushed forward together with the qatar sheiks? i think the point is to counter the new MR event in vietnam, but i don't know the full story. prize money is big, i think 50k to winner.

the player list is secret? it's nowhere to be found and the link to their webpage is dead. i see some chinese 8-ballers / snooker amateurs there, and alledgedly zielinski and biado will appear. at some point.

1-ball on the spot, template and race to 7.

this is weird af.

tournament with 300k prize fund and 76 viewers, noname arab players dogging easy balls. comments disabled.

go to their facebook and their promo poster for the event shows kaci, fsr, filler (twice), ko and fedor. none of them are going. knowing the region, i'm sure it will get even weirder as it unfolds

I found this.

Assuming this is correct, you can see under "players" for main event the usual cast of characters who I think start on October 4 and are in stage 2. There are also these brutal qualifiers called 1st chance, 2nd chance, 3rd chance, and 4th chance. If it is like they used to do in World 9-Ball, they are single elimination for which you have to win many matches in a row. If you lose day1, you can reenter day2, etc --I think. Once you get 4 rounds into the qualifiers, things will look different ;-)

People barely know the US Open is going on and we expect some semi-random event in Qatar to pull interest? Also, the fact that its a WPA deal is a double 'no-go' for this pool fan. Not interested in anything that band of stuffed shirt blowhards put on.

just eyeing through, it doesn't seem correct. fedor isn't going, he doesn't want to play 1 on the spot template break and is playing the peri open those dates. kaci has one functional arm, i doubt we'll see him.

Yeah, I guess we'll see... I saw this post from the Polish contingent yesterday. That's where I got the link.

Their qualification format looks brutal. 128 man brackets (with only a handful of byes) play races to 7, single elimination, to the last 4 players. The last 4 qualify for the main stage. Each day starts over with a new qualification tournament, with the same players from the prior day, less the ones who qualified. I can't imagine running that tournament. Too many matches for one day, IMO.

Watching the youtube stream there does not seem to be a shot clock.

Tables are Rasson.

Youtube link does seem better than the Doha World Championship days. I'd say its production level is "experienced independent" US streamer level, with a few cameras.

There is English language commentary.

Great equipment, refs, high-speed streaming and English-speaking commentators so far so good. It might take a while to catch on but anybody that wants to Money in the pocket of Pool Players should be welcomed and supported...,

The player list shows SVB, Styer, and Lombardo from the USA. Are they participating?

Prize fund $300K ( first place $50K) about same as an MR major event
Most top Euro US players still in run for Mosconi Cup place will skip this and play the final Mosconi Cup points back to back events in Hanoi i.e. ranking event Peri 9 Ball Open (Oct5-9, Winner $25K/ Prize fund $100K) and major event Hanoi Open (Oct 10-15)

I am guessing will be much weaker field than the MR Hanoi events which MR has been promoting non-stop :D

So winning $50,000 or $25,000 here could be a lot easier than chasing/winning the $40,000 or $20,000 at the Mosconi Cup. Does the "skirmish" between the WPA and Matchroom have any effect on this?

I hope they don’t go. This seems like a move by the WPA to get some deep pockets to challenge Matchroom, and we all know what Qatar will do to try (unsuccessfully) to purchase international respectability via sport.

I don't think so. This event was probably in the works before MR came on the scene last year.

...snip... Does the "skirmish" between the WPA and Matchroom have any effect on this?
From everything I saw, a big YES for the Asian players. Biado withdrew from the Hanoi Open. He was on a livestream action match a couple nights ago and his wife stated it was due to the ACBS letter. She said they would be going to Qatar instead.

The Asian players will be picking sides starting from this tournament.
