4 GB of data stored on punch cards in 1959.
I remember when magazines were filled with ad's for keypunch schools. It was the job of the future and demand was unlimited! I stumble over a keypunch card every now and then and have to laugh while shaking my head sadly.
The local vo-tech promoted enough money to buy a lathe that ran on punch cards. A quarter of a million dollars and I think the only program they had made two inch round trailer hitch balls. Still the wonder of the ages, it could cut a true round ball!

A friend offered me a $50,000 computer when he retired from the insurance biz…
…..he said a $2,000 lap top could do the same job by then.
There is a mainframe in Asia that is critical enough that if it goes down for thirty minutes the pentagon gives them a call. That thing is so old that the 3"x5" logic gates can be flipped open in several layers and repaired! Full sized file cabinet size hard drives hold disks the size of an old full sized LP music album. The entire hard drive holds ten megabytes or megabits, I forget which. I guess this is finally retired but it was in use for decades after you would think it was long gone.
I got a super discount on memory chips years ago, paid $256 each for two gigabyte memory chips! Right before I left the nuke we bought a full gigabyte of storage. For some reason the knuckleheads didn't buy a RAID system, just storage with no redundancy. Nine thousand dollars! Six or eight hard drives ganged together. For another thousand or so they could have had a RAID system. Cool thing about them, you can keep right on choogling, fully functional if a hard drive crashes plus you can change out a hard drive while the thing is running.
My laptop is getting very old now, lost track. It is upgraded to Windows eleven and has 500 gigabyte of storage I believe it is, half a terabyte. I could have upgraded to a terabyte for a couple hundred but I am only using sixty-eight gigs with over four hundred free now. If I ever need more storage I'll buy a key or two for almost nothing.
Changing world! Before I got hurt in 1988 I couldn't turn a computer on and had no intention of learning how to in this lifetime.

Agreed. Money also means freedom! If something breaks...you just handle it. Car, Refrigerator or what ever. It is liberating not to be "stuck" on every little life event.
