Gorilla Glue

I’d be remiss if I didn’t post this. Just opened a new bottle of GG CA to install a couple of tips. Prepared the tip and ferrule as normal, waited 10 minutes and started to shape the tip. The tip fell off!! Never had that happen with Loctite Gel. Only used GG because the store was out of Loctite Gel. Tried again after sanding tip and facing off the ferrule again. Guess what? Tip fell off again even after waiting 15 minutes this time. Same thing after waiting 20 minutes. I don’t have all day to install tips. Got a bottle of Loctite Gel and finished the job with no problems. Here is the lot # for the GG - G130317L. Not saying all bottles in that lot have a problem, but mine did.

I've had the opposite experience. I very rarely have tips come off, but since I switched from Loctite to Gorilla glue gel, I've had zero problems. I usually cut and shape within a minute or two of applying. I use a very small amount of accelerator on the ferrule before putting the tip on.
It's possible you just got a bad batch, or found one of those ferrule materials that is very resistant to glue.

The ferrule was Tomahawk and have had no problems with Loctite and that ferrule. I think I just got a bad bottle. This happens from time to time with many products.

I'm using gels now, I've never had issues using gel glue. I know i have full coverage when i see the glue drip out. CA glue is just too thin for me. Years ago we were using crazy glue in the poolhall i worked at. I came in with a bottle of loctite one day and the owner was hooked on loctite and we used that for the next three years.

The only other advise i have is make sure the surface is dead flat. Dry fit the tip and if you see a wooble it's not flat.

Glue choice is like tip choice we all have our prefference.

Used Gel since it came out, the key I've found is after the facing is complete.
Put slightly too much on ferrule, rotate tip and look at it making sure both surfaces are lubed.
Center it.
Then drop the tip end on to a counter, recenter and let dry/vertical.
You'll get a 360 degree visual of the glue ''muffin top'' a term I've heard to describe women who have a fat overhang/around their beltline.

Dap Weldwood Instant Adhesive. It's a thick CA based glue that I have used a few times so far. Results have been very promising on Tomahawk material.

How's the glue ring at the bottom?
I sure would like to see.

Glue ring under the tip? Can't really see much. Can't say that I've ever really noticed anything more than a bit of darkening of the leather on any proper tip install. I'll see about a photo.

If you are asking about under the ferrule, I wouldn't know because I wouldn't use it for a ferrule.

The glue is a thick CA based glue, I'm not really positive that there is anything special about it, but it claims an 18mo shelf life and has a great cap.

this is age old remedy.. make sure to shake up or mix the glue before you use it, the thick stuff I just slowly turn the bottle to mix it up

Serious here, I have never seen a bottle of gorilla glue gel that would even move it you left the bottle upside down. How did you get it out?

That was good you shoud do stand up comedy muffin tops i remember those , when the ladies pants were smaller than their waist ha ha Those were the days

Has anyone seen the Loctite Pro Gel? I bought a bottle and turned it upside down for several minutes and could not get any glue out.
Turned it upside down for a day and could get glue out of it. I have not tried it.

That's what I get with Gorilla glue gel.

You shake it vigorously, then tap the cap on a hard surface to get the glue into the top. Comes out just fine after that.
Instructions are on the back. Also, keep the tip of the bottle clean, if you get glue inside the cap, it can muck things up a bit.

🤔If all else fails,
read the instructions. 😉

I appreciate the advice. Today I had to go buy a storm door at Home Depot. So while I was there I stopped by the paint department where the glue is and told the employee working there that I had not had any luck with this glue and asked what I was doing wrong. He said they get a lot of returns on this one and it may have just been a bad batch. I opened a package of it and said I want a witness that I was doing everything the right way. I shook the hell out of it then tapped it over and over to get it into the nozzle and it never changed shape from the 1/4 full bottle at the bottom of the container unchanged. Now what? at least I didn't buy it then have to return it this time. I'm sure it must work here and there but it is a problematic product.

Perhaps I've been lucky so far. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I've had great results as far as tips adhering, so I'm going to keep using it for now. Maybe they'll fix the problem before I see it.
