Unfortunately with many sought-after cuemakers that's how business is done or they won't make you a cue.

And they still get plenty of orders. :oops:
 
Would anyone renovate their house for $5000-$20,000 without a formal agreement and estimated time frame. How about any custom work… quality takes time but how much time. And how about you paid for something and nothing gets delivered. The judge, fraud department, PayPal need’s paperwork. No paperwork? How about the one person shop gets sick and can’t produce. Or the shop burns down and there goes the farm. Is my imagination working overtime. Cuemakers/vendors need protection… what about the customer.

This thought is kind of cynical but if he's keeping high dollar cues for 5 or 10 years at a time, how many of the owners are passing away waiting for their cue? Can't image someone like Dennis trying to contact next of kin.
 
I'm genuinely surprised by this. Why take orders when you are 'overloaded with work'... because you want more money... I'm amazed by the fact people still choose someone with such a reputation... enormous and unnecessary wait times and poor contact. But also that people are willing to part with such cash with no real guarantees of any kind. More money than sense.

3 kinds of vendors/people,.. Professionals. Hackers, Crooks.
 
I’ve spoken about this many many times before on another site and cue collectors frowned on the notion that I call out a lot of shady cue builders. For one they are doing contract work. They are no different then a guy building you a patio or pool. They need to have a contractor’s license for work over X amount of dollars. Check your local laws.

What they are doing is already illegal in some states.

I’ve said it here the pool industry is filled with scumbags and bozos. They may not show it at work or home but eventually it comes out and always seem to involve pool or at a pool room. Some hide it better than others but your worst will always be seen at pool rooms or some pool related thing.

Just here in KC he has had a Gus of a friend of mine for over 10 years, almost 15. Can’t get a reply.
Another friend here in KC sent his Searing cue back for work about 10 years ago. Can’t get a reply.
This is some of just in KC.

I had his good friends John Showman and Randy Mobley both on separate occasions appeal to Dennis to complete
our agreement. NOTHING!

out thousands each, some who cannot really afford it.

Wow Will, very sorry to hear you're having this experience and I know you to be a gentleman. 14-15 years ago you were helpful with the debacle I had going on which eventually (after 7 years) worked out really well (I think people can still search here for the Searing Border Brothers cues completed in 2011). I saw the mill shortly after it was installed--it is a beauty of a machine. I recall that you owned a nice ebony Searing merry widow but that cue doesn't come close to covering the cost of the mill I saw. I hope somehow Dennis will accept the responsibilty he has with you and make amends. I also hope the OP can have his cue shipped back.

One of the most hilarious situations around the cue business is when I hear people mention being on Dennis' waiting list for a cue build.

It’s a shame.
Custom cue makers are facing a challenging time right now with all the production cues in the market.
I have to believe these complaints of a top level cue makers will hurt the rest of the cue makers even more.
 
Jeez another Searing is a dirtbag thread!. A good friend of mine died with Dennis owning him quite a bit of money. It's shameful what some of these "superstar" cue builders get away with!

Seems like the buyers blow smoke up Searings ass. I don’t see any Yelp
or BBB reviews/complaints…that does not help new buyers. I like reviews. A few too many negatives and I’m done.

What other site? I would like to read up on your extensive library of expertise in shady cue builders so I can avoid them.

My transaction in writing was provided by the vendor. I only signed it and mailed a check. He was a first class gentleman.. I’m sorry things did not work out.
