I recently acquired a Bob Frey full splice Hoppe ring cue- some call a fancy SP. Flat face 3/8 10 pin - I will say the cue hits very well. About the same as my former TS fancy SP - Frey probably made that one too.
Firm , crisp hitting but not clunky like some cheaper SPs. Seems to me that the wood selected for the shafts had much to do with the hit. So, I would pay attention to the wood selection as much as the actual shaft specs.
When you tap the shaft against a pool ball there is a distinct ringing sound unlike a sort of thud that you hear from a house cue for example.
