Bathroom breaks at the U.S. Open

It's nice that it's not tennis because.....?
I actually kind of agree with you on the break issue. But when you lauded tennis for their no nonsense rules etc….it raised the pool hall in me First, I’ll admit my bias against tennis. I don’t like playing it, watching it, or being around it. I know some of the people are fine. Others not so much. That’s just me. My parents liked it, belonged to clubs, went to tournaments some, etc…They lived in the desert for a stretch in retirement. One of the best ATP tournaments is there right? The Indian Wells event. I don’t know how much you would have to pay me to go there and watch a match at a nice facility in good weather. I do know I’d probably pay at least $200 not to go watch say 4 hours if it. If I had to pay 500 I’d probably sit through it. I’d probably take $1000 to watch 4 hours but maybe not 6 or 8. I don’t like the sport, the culture, or the clothes. Again others do. More power to them. I thought of including some of this in my post, but didn’t. Just left the cynical one line. Again, maybe the pool hall in me. But you asked…..

Now on to the substance a little more. If some tennis playing rules maven in short pants is going to time me in the bathroom and complain to a guy in the little chair on a lifeguard stand…. Well I dunno what I’d do but it might not comport with your hopes for either tennis or pool. And I’m not the argue with opponents or refs type believe it or not.

I hear you. I didn't think I'd like watching it either, but I've been to the U.S. Open Tennis Championship about 5 times now, mainly because my friend is a tennis nut and needed someone to go with, and I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed the matches live. So you never know...

But whether you like another sport or not, there are things, though, that we can take from it that may help us. For example, did you know that the WPBA Classic tour --- the most successful women's pro pool tour in the world that lasted 15 years, was designed after the format of the PGA tour? So while we don't have to like a particular sport, we can certainly learn from their successes, and even copy some of them. Nothing wrong with that.

Well, I like golf. And there have been plenty of problems with slow play and how to address it. To my knowledge the whiniest most self absorbed pro would never ask for a 3 minute timer in the porta potty, even if 3 minutes is now the limit to look for a lost ball. And I have been to tennis matches, although nothing as big as a US Open. I know I would pay a fine rather than go watch the us tennis open in person. I find the excessively strict and detailed tennis rule nonsense. 3 cushion has a decent rule about the automatic break given the length of a typical game. Different formats need different things. The tennis rule doesn’t seem to be needed in any event IMO.

I used tennis as an example, not because we should copy them exactly, but because someone here was arguing that the increased prize fund in pool events justifies allowing unlimited breaks.

How about: mid match (somehow TBD) both players get a break, take it or leave it.

I like the way the WPBA does it. Each player gets one 5 minute break at their choice of time as long as it's between racks. Their opponent can also leave the arena with them, or can choose to stay and break and shoot with a ref watching if it's their turn to break the balls at the table.

If a player chooses to leave the arena when their opponent takes a break, they have to be back at the same time or before their opponent. If they return later than their opponent who called the break, then it counts as their own break and they can't take another.

So if everybody plays by the rules, each player can get two breaks per match.

any pro pool player should in a tournament mind his pees and cues.

Triple or quadruple pun? I wish Jackie was here to see it!

For any that don't know, P's and Q's refer to pints and quarts of beer so this is saying any pro player should watch his beer or beer consumption. Can't argue with that and it might reduce the need to watch himself pee!

2 breaks for each player per match. and can leave during another's break.
if having medical issues then get more approved by the t.d. or ref.

thats why i like a time bank for each player.
fran post 134 i answered your question with my opinion.

Fargo must be doing something right. We had a 600 and under tournament in Ellijay this weekend. Several of us were 570 or higher. But the 596 and 588 the two highest ranked players won it.

of course, the weaker players donate to the better ones in a tournament for the pleasure of playing.
that is how most tournaments are structured.

but having the fargo rated entry level is a start to equalize it somewhat. next is the rating and spot to even things out. and watch the entries grow. although with the complaining from the better players.

in the pool room players ask for a spot from the better players or wont play if they are smart at least. and get it most times.
