I've noticed a theme over the years when it comes to pool players and their 3 cushion games -- we greatly exaggerate how good they are at in comparison to 3 cushion players. Like saying Efren was world class at it -- he wasn't. He was really good at it for a pool player. Matlock probably was too.

he wasnt, and definitely not a world champion at balkline as dr bill has repeated over the years many times.
hes very good at the games. made it to the final of 1 cushion in the south east asia carom tournament which is a great accomplishment,
lost big to a viet player that is world class , ngo dinh nai.
has no chance with the likes of caudron de bruijn jaspers sanchez etc where as hes still a big threat to anyone in 1pkt .
Dave's hi-run is 17+. I know after becoming good at pool and running around with good players…Matlock was a mythical figure talked about in hushed voices by other top players.

Now that's probably true. I love how he cues the ball. Great technique and great all-around player no doubt.

About Efren and his level of 3-Cushion. I have one friend. Korean old guy who is very good at 3-Cushion. He told me stories how Blomdahl cashed Efren. They played 3-cushion and Pool one match. If both win their games its a draw. If either one win both it is win. Blomdahl was at time shooting around 1.7 and Efren was 1.0 - 1.2 told by Korean friend who saw these matches. So Efren was trapped. He did not have a chance in 3-Cushion and Blomdahl is very good pool and snooker too. So Blomdahl won sometimes pool and cashed Efren a lot

What is provable, however: USA hasn't been able to produce an internationally competitive player for decades.
And yes, i'll happily call sang lee American, though he was hardly a result of the USA billiard scene.

Blondahl beat Efren one set to 7, I believe. imo, that is like a race to 5pt in 3c, hardly a test.
Look, i've known the guy over 30yrs and he doesn't blow smoke. Dave's pretty quiet dude and if he says he did something you can bank on it. The number is in the 17-19 point range. I've watched the guy put sixes-sevens together a BUNCH. He can't beat top full-timers but he can flat play.

Blomdahl was brought up in a 3c family. I believe his dad perhaps won a world cup and was definitely swedish champ at one point.
I also know blomdahl played a pocket billiards league in years past.
I wasn't questioning the run part, it was the coulda been champ part.
We just haven't been a big enough fish tank to develop top 3c players.
Neither of us were questioning his high run.
