I finally got it!

I’ve always hated when right before the match they semi-jokingly hit you with “Take it easy on me”. ( then they open with a two pack lol ). That phrase always kinda took me out for a second. Almost felt like sharking. My mind is ready to go to war and it’s like they’re saying “please don’t shoot”. So I used to say back “You take it easy on me!”. Or I’d force a smile and ignore it. Never knew what to say. I finally figured it out. When they say “take it easy on me”, I now look them dead in the eye with a straight face and a concerned look like they just said they had cancer, and I reply “You got it no problem” ( and then I play my normal game). Let them figure out what that means. What do yall say back to “take it easy on me”?

Realistically, smile and nod is about the best. Alternatively:

Look straight at them as if they were a cockroach and say, "I plan to beat you like a red-headed mule." Then quickly say with a smile, "Just kidding. I can't make a ball lately. Blind Jimmy beat me for a hundred last night at five a rack."

Or maybe, "I hope we both play our best games and luck has no part in the outcome," More simply, "Play well," as you shake before the lag.

first of all, take it easy on me
is a really stupid thing to say
in this situation, i have no idea
what the person means

who in the world would ever
take it easy on an opponent
and why would one ask for it

ask them-
do you want me to miss on purpose?

or, you could remind them that
michael jordan never beat anyone
by more than two points, but you
know what? he always beat them

I don’t give it a thought. I don’t care what you say or do or who you are. I don’t care your gender or skill level. I’m there to snap necks and cash checks. I want to beat someone so bad they wonder why they ever thought it was a good idea to play pool to begin with. It’s like white noise I don’t notice it or pay attention to it.

People who tell me to take it easy really need it. Still kills all my enthusiasm. End up playing king of the kennels. What a waste of time; etiquette or something...

I get this every time I match up prior to league or local tourney play. My answer is usually in the ballpark of, "No worries, I will" all the way to "this is will be bloody" depending on how well I know them.

Aside, if this type of inconsequential comment throws you off. You weren't meant to win.

It happened to me recently. I told him, it's OK you can do it, but you will have to earn it. (Sure it can be embarrassing to lose or it could be nervousness to play someone that is better, but this is where much of our experience and learning happen).
Other times when it's happened and I've felt extra focused and competitive I've thought (oh good I've already got in his head) or maybe they are just being nice and friendly and joking. Either way, I think it's disrespectful to let someone win or not to play your best. We all have brain farts and miss easy shots sometimes. But respect yourself, respect your opponent, respect the game and beat them 5-0 and never leave them a shot when they come to the table. Nobody likes to lose but nobody likes to take charity either.

I'm there to shoot their liver out! :p

It sounds like you're letting things bother you that shouldn't bother you.

Happened to me my last tournament a few months ago. Earlier I beat a guy I hadn't beaten in years, maybe never but thought we were always close till about 5 years ago when his game jumped big. He retired a year earlier.

Well the guy I was up against that said that, I believe I've only beaten once in 25 years.

The comment kinda threw me for a minute.
Won't say it was the reason he beat me. He won simply because he's a better player.

Plan on catching him one more time though. The 3C group is close nit and he's one of the good guys.

"but I like it rough daddy"

That'd probably throw some funk in them.

I tend to smile and nod. One guy I don't particularly like, I just kept pretending I didn't catch what he was saying. "Excuse me?" "Wait, what?" "what do you mean?" "Oh, oh right, ok"
