5/16-18 joint mystery.

Hello all.
Posting this here bcuz I searched forums for answers, but found none. Can an expert solve this for me once and for all... Why do some 5/16-18 fit certain cues and not others with same diameter pin and joint?? Example: Players 5/16-18 fits Meucci and Mali, but not Heubler.
Heubler 5/16-18 won't fit Meucci or Players.
These are all supposed to be 5/16-18 thread cues. Somebody rise up and tackle this please.
This is why I've always gone 5/16-14. Lol. Only diff there is piloted varies. Help!!??

I've had a radial pin that didn't accept every shaft I had. It's just one of the ways this industry Fs with you.

If the minor diameter is not the same you have fit issues. Same thing happens with 5/16x14 pins. Not all the same.
Was hoping you'd chime in!! And you're correct. Thanks Garczar.
Minor makes the pin larger as it goes down correct?? What about Acme?? How's it different from standard pins??

I've been lucky w my 14's so far.
I have a lot of 14s as well, there are some that screw on looser than others. One thing to experience is screwing a mezz united joint shaft on a 14 butt. You will feel how nice that joint is.

the minor is where the threads meet the inner shank/stem of the pin. probably should ask this in cuemaker forum.

Example: Players 5/16-18 fits Meucci and Mali, but not Heubler.
My Huebler 5/16x18 fits my Players 5/16x18. See photo of Huebler at left. The Players is a $130 S-PSP-20. The Players 5/16x18, though, did not fit a Viking model 513 and its 5/16x18.

An AZer recommended the following to make my 5/16x18 shaft (here a Cuetec Cynergy that also fits the Huebler or Players) fit on a Viking butt:

I think it's either turn down the Viking pin on the unthreaded part or have the Cuetec shaft bored slightly. I would think modifying the shaft would be the better option but I could be wrong.

I thought Hueblers weren’t a true 5/16 x 18, that they are actually a bit undersized.

It seems that the Huebler shaft fits the Huebler butt snug. Ditto the Players shaft to the Huebler butt. The fit is fine and connecting the two is not forced.

It seems there is less slop in the connection between the Huebler shaft and Huebler butt than the Players shaft with the Players butt.

There are thread standards to ensure interoperability if threads are made at different shops. Most of the standards we use today were developed well over 100 years ago.

The form (shape) of the thread is designed for many different scenarios. A 60 deg V thread is general purpose. An acme thread is for higher forces and for motion. A buttress thread is for high forces in only one direction (like a clamp). A light bulb thread is for easy assembly so you don’t electrocute yourself standing on a ladder.

A machinist can make any of these threads to a standard. They can also customize them quite easily by adjusting the lathe as they cut the thread.

Coming back to pool, that’s exactly what several cue makers over the years did, in search of that elusive “hit”, and/or simply to have something unique.

I wish!!
Can you still get mezz shafts and cues thru that American distributor??

How about that!!
I bought a players cue so I'd have a shaft to fit an old Mali butt I ran across. None of the other shafts would fit it. Not Meucci or Heubler.
That's when I started trying to find out wtf was going on w these things. I had no clue there was such variance in threads and pins!! Crazy.
