New Schon Cues

I just ordered a STL - 7. The shaft is described as a 12.7 mm. The tip (Le Pro) is described as 13 mm. Does this mean that when the cue is retipped the person replacing the tip, starts with a 13 mm tip and uses a lathe to widdel a 13 mm tip down to 12.7 mm?

Just curious, how long have you been playing? And yes, most tips are 14mm then get trimmed by installer to proper size. Where did you see a Schon advertised with a 12.7 tip? Stock size is 13mm unless you pay extra for smaller diameter.

I've been playing pool off and on for a few decades. I stopped playing for the last 10 years or so and I have never seen numbers like this before. I thought the standard size was 13 mm, 12.5mm and lower onto the snooker cues that get down to 10mm or smaller.

I thought maybe the standard sizes have changed. I ordered the cue from Beckman Billiards in Berlin Germany as I am in Europe now. The cue wasn't advertised as 12.7 but when I called an ordered the cue and the woman I spoke to claimed the shaft was 12.7.

Is this a new cue or pre-owned?

Previous owner may have had it cut down.
 
I just check the Schon website and the shaft sizes vary widely. See the screenshot below:

Probably was one that was stocked at 12.75 and she may have measured it and it came out 12.7. 12.75 to 12.7 is just a thousandth or two. Almost meaningless. Yes you can order any size but most stock just 13mm, some though stock 12.75 also, of which this is probably one of those. Or it might actually be used, and they sanded it down and are passing it off as new. Look it over closely, butt for any nicks, and shaft the finish and what tip is on it, as they only use one make and style of tip. If it's not the tip they use, it is a used cue.

I have extra Schon shafts and had a new unused one. Here is a picture of the new/brown one on the right, and a spare used/black one on the left.
It should look exactly like the one on the right.
Also, with that stock Schon tip, you should be able to break great with it also for now.

Also, Schon does not use LePro tips. Proceed with caution!
Schon tips are Everest tips only, if it's not that it's a used cue.

Funny. Schon was around long before Everest were thought of.
They used as they claimed their own tips but were 'Water Buffalo' tips.
Le Pro are WB tips. Schon also, back then, used ivory an Westinghouse micarta tips.
Do you think Tiger came out with Everest tips and then along came Schon Cues?
 
You know how a half inch and a 13 millimeter are almost the same thing? It is actually 12.7 mm.

I for one, salute America’s stubborn refusal to conform to the metric system.

Most places you buy new a new Schon you can choose what tip you want on it. I just bought a new one last year with a predator victory on it

No, Schon predated Tiger products. Schon switched from single-layer wb to Everest a few yrs back. They haven't used ivory/micarta for ferrules for a long time.

I understand they used to use other tips, but that was many years ago. This cue is being advertised as new, and for the last five years or more they have used Everest, and that is also what came on my 4 recent Schons over the last 5 years. Not sure why you are confused and talking about tips from the past as that was years ago, and this is a supposed new cue and all new Schons for the last 5 years or so came with those Everests.
As to knowing about older Schons, I lived close to where they were made and bought my first one in 82ish, it was a one off, that I walked into their original little shop and they had about 6 or 8 cues laying out on a table. Had them build it with features of multiple cues. It was a one only, close to when they were first starting out. I have been with Schon for a long time and still stop frequently at their present shop. I foolishly sold that early one off Schon to Koinkid for his collection, one of the dumbest things I have ever done.
Also, a dealer is not taking Schon's standard tip off to put a cheaper one on to be placed in their stock inventory, that's just foolish. They will change tips for a buyer, but not for a cue put in inventory.
The fact remains that if it actually has a LePro tip, odds are high that it is a used cue or at the very least a used shaft.
