I would highly recommend this Arthur cue, but it breaks two of your rules. Probably not new (though it might be), and it has a 3/8x10 joint pin, which also breaks your other rule. And, possibly more then you would want to pay, at close to $4k.

Zen is a Taiwanese brand, but it's based out of Shanghai for the most part from what I can tell. They build mainland, then use ORG (TW based) and area specific (world regional) sales representatives to sell and distribute.

That's a nice-looking cue, and Joss are solid players.Well, I am not having any luck with this next cue purchase. So it looks like I might just go with this one.

Unless you want to spend $2k, I’d get the Joss N7 Color of Money Cue that a couple of friends bought.
I would add a leather wrap because unless you get a premium Cuttyhunk linen fishing line which is very
hard to locate, the linen wraps today suck. So I’d upgrade for a leather wrap or inquire about even cork.
I’d ask about getting a Kielwood shaft instead of the maple shaft you’d normally be getting. Unfortunately,
Joss has a emaciated list of tip options so ask them to install a tip you’ll send them or have Joss purchase it.
A player I know has one of Cohen’s Color of Money cues and it’s a dandy but it should be for what it costs.
Pool Dawg had been selling the N7 cue for $782 but it’s sold out. Highly unlikely it gets sold again @ 15% off.

The N7 is certainly famous. Definitely a cool cue.

Both of those are great alternatives. I like the Paladin style knight cue a little more than the Horseshoe & Ace of Spades version. However, I’d pick the Horseshoe one because it has Dan’s name in the forearm. I think he was under appreciated for all his talent and the introduction of other talented cue makers like Mike Corcoran, Tim Scruggs and letting Bill Stroud do his thing. There was never a Joss East back in the day but that’s how everyone colloquially referred to them …..Joss West and Joss East. The fact is there was always just Joss Cues. IMO, Chopcoc came up with better choices to consider.

I had the coolest Mcdermott prototype cue, that had a D Series forearm, with sharp points and veneers, and Knight inlays in the butt sleeve, kind of like what I see in that Joss.
By the way, I would highly recommend a Mcdermott over a Joss, because I feel the Mcdermott is a better cue, and they have far better customer service, in my experience.
Dan was still making true customs all along. I had arranged for him to make a unique cue with a blank I have. I hesitated for years, now he is gone and the opportunity is lost.
I think you are correct, because JOSS went the route they did, they lost some reputation for custom cues, and Dan ended up being underappreciated for a long time and still is. I am a champion for underdogs, underappreciated cue makers. I have a Paul Dayton cue that I love. I think he was underappreciated. I dig the guys that were into the wood. Stroud certainly made great cues, as did Scruggs. But JOSS lives on.
I don't know what Stephen is doing as far as customs. Only one way to find out is call and talk to him. I have never spoken to him. I only ever spoke to Dan, which was always an education.
Regardless of the custom vs production conversation and whether or not Dan was underappreciated, in their own little corner of the cue world Joss has been and is a juggernaut. They do make fine cues today, and have done so since before many of their customers were born.
Joss' are pretty looking very well made cues. Hey would you mind posting pic of your GC4 w/apple.... maybe DM it to me.... don't want to jack your thread.
Would you prefer a Lada over a Mercedes if they offered better customer service?
I dig McDermott. They were my "second love" and I have a number of them including my first one, a D2.
McDermott imports cues. Joss has never done that.
Joss is a much smaller operation.
McDermott makes great cues. I recommend them generally. But my cues are A, B, C, and D series mostly. The newest one I have is an EF.
But I generally don't recommend one maker over the other anyway, especially based on such things as customer service. I am only interested in the cue, the product. My primary cue is a 40 to 45 year old Joss. I played with it today.
I'm really just glad we are talking about US cue makers. We could see some examples from Pechauer and Schon too.

Yeah, they have import lines, but I bet their US Made cues are still very high quality. And, I bet they still use very nice looking BEM in their cues. Joss does not seem to use any BEM in their cues anymore. They now use some sort of very generic looking low grade Curly Maple, that just makes me think of those $100 DP cues every time I see them.
