Matchroom schedule - double-dipping in Vietnam

Matchroom just announced another Peri Open in Vietnam in the first week of October. The event will precede the Hanoi Open for the third year in a row.

What is different this time is the prize fund. The Peri Open raised its total prize fund to $200,000, with $40,000 for the winner. Previously the tourney paid out $100,000 or so, with $25,000 for the winner.

The Hanoi Open will also pay out $200,000, with $40,000 for the winner.

Vietnam thus matches the U.S. with two big back-to-back events with top prizes of $40,000. (Florida and U.S. opens).

Hanoi is classified by MR as a major. Peri, like the Florida Open, is classified as a second-tier ranking event. Yet both ranking events will have 256 invitees, just like their "big" brothers.

A ton of ranking points available in August in the U.S. and in Vietnam in the first two weeks of October.

EDITED SECTION BELOW

Now we get word the WPA has sanctioned a slew of events in Ho Chi Minh City in late September, giving players a chance at three tourneys in a row in Vietnam.

Still no word on dates for the World Pool Masters, World Cup of Pool or Spanish Open. Frazer had indicated last year or early this year that all three events were in the offing for 2025. Yet she later hedged when asked by Doggin It ... or one of the WNT commentators.

I have to assume there will be a WPM. MR is now promoting last year's WPM top matches on its Facebook page. That is usually, but not always, a sign that it will announce a date soon.

A Spanish Open and World Cup of Pool seem less likely, but who knows. A few years ago, the WCP was held days after the inaugural and only Spanish Open took place.

The 2023 Spanish Open had good crowds and a lively atmosphere, but it was too hot when it was held in mid-June.

Lo and behold, MR still has a big window open in the last three weeks of June and first week of July as well as the entire month of September.

So far, no word on whether the WPA will stage a Ho Chi Minh Open for a second year in a row. The 2024 event started almost a week before the Peri Open, giving players a chance at three tourneys in a row in Vietnam.

I wonder if there was an agreement between the WPA and WNT not to have three events in Vietnam for fear of oversaturation. We'll see soon enough.

june is too soon.

it's kind of mismanaged, even though we now know the MR-WPA negotiations may explain it. both the world pool masters and the world cup are supposed to be perks for those who have performed well. incentives to go to every major. MR can of course do what they like with their events but as a player i wouldn't be happy about it.

Triple or quadruple dipping. The World 10-Ball was just announced.

In HCM City! I used to get hazardous duty pay when I was there.

Been robbed at knife point twice in my life. Once in London, once in HCMC. Difference being, I enjoy being in, and would go back to HCMC.
Only event that lines up with my work calendar is PERI open, considering it. Lots of Friends from China and TW likely to attend.

Thanks for the info. I must admit I had to look up the word "sked," having never heard of it before. It is, I guess, slang or jargon for "schedule." Now i know.

It is good there are more opportunities for the pool professionals on the global tournament trail. Though Filler is one of the best, if not the best, in the world to win many events in 2025, I have a feeling we're going to see some new names and faces in the headlines. Let the games begin!

Hah!

Sorry. Sked is a word my colleagues and I use a lot at work. We often use shorthand like that on Slack in light of the constant deadlines we face. Similarly, we use "K" or "k" in place of the word okay.

I don't use "sked" in regular conversations. (-:

You use sked in almost every post you submit here. It is a little annoying to tell you the truth.

Time is running out.

Hard to see a Spanish Open this year or the World Cup of Pool.

No big deal about the Spanish Open - it's not an established event.

The absence of the WCP for the second straight year would be a major fail. Either keep it going or eliminate it. The WCP was held every year since 2006 except for the pandemic year of 2020.

MR won't do anything big during the WPA 10-ball tourney in HCMC.

As such the biggest windows left are:

*June 12 to July 8. A major tourney would be unlikely on such short notice.

The WPM could be squeezed in, but I doubt it. SVB and Gorst are also doing their 10-ball rematch from June 13-15. Can't hold a WPM without either one of them.

*Sept 1 to Sept 13. Hard to see a major tourney in this time slot between the US Open in August and the WPA 10-ball championship starting in mid-September. WPM or WCP could fit in, especially if held in Vietnam or a nearby part of Asia to lighten the travel on the players.

*Oct 20-Nov 9. This is the period between the Hanoi Open and the International Open. But it's not fully open. The Reyes Cup has to be held during this time frame. Almost certainly it will be skedded scheduled to start within a week of the end of the Hanoi Open on Oct. 12.

The WPM has sometimes been held in the Sept-Nov time frame, most recently from 2011 to 2014.

The event has been skipped just twice since its inception in 1993 - in 2016 and 2020 due to the pandemic. Couldn't find a reason why it was canceled in 2016.

MR hasn't had any big events after the Mosconi Cup in early December. No reason to expect one now.

Missed this earlier in the week, but Matchroom just announced another "major" tournament for this year. In the Philippines in October.

Frazer announced it a few days ago on Facebook Reels. Said more details would come soon.

I've been expecting MR to add a second major in Asia. There are now two in the U.S. and two in Europe, with the WPC in the Middle East.

While I think MR would love to be in China, the hurdles seem high, especially given the tensions with Taiwan. Probably knocked Taiwan out of contention, too.

As such the Philippines makes the most sense for reasons well understood.

Given a mostly filled up calendar, the start of the tourney would be either Oct. 21 or Oct 28.

The Reyes Cup, btw, ends Oct. 19.

Would have been better to the Reyes to come after the Philippines Open, but MR is still trying to build its tour.

Curious to see the prize fund. All the other majors pay at least $40,000 to the winner.

I also wonder where it will all end. MR and Frazer have talked about reviving the Spanish Open as a major event, but it won't be this year. Frazer has also implied something could be coming to Texas eventually.

After adding the Florida and Philippines majors this year, MR has seven "major" tournaments. I can't seem them adding more than one or two more in total. Each event takes five days and there's lots of travel around it. Not to mention, lots of WPA events.

The way it stands now, one or both of the World Cup of Pool and the World Pool Masters probably will be skipped.

There is a small window in the first two weeks of September and the first week of November for one of these events.

Begs the question: Could MR phase out one, two or all three of its invitational events in favor of more majors? I'd think the World Pool Masters would have the edge in staying alive, but MR has seemed more committed to the Premier League of Pool.

thats great news. this was the last time MR had an event in the philippines (listen to the crowd):

i hope it will have the same kind of buzz

Peach was close to fouling the cue ball when he dropped his cue after making the 9-ball….like there wasn’t enough drama…..

loved those tournaments. earl in cardiff, peach in manila, overcoming the pressure and a tough/hostile crowd. of course gomez had more pressure on him (and choked) but it was still a 100k match
