i don't doubt the greedy part but it's more likely that storing media in 1975 was bulky and heavy and that the data writing for each photo took forevers
Kodak is making a lot of money these days from selling film.
Film is quite a thing the last few years.
Developing labs report that they have these days more work than they ever did (but there are less labs around)
