Hu's Avator/Smorg Badges

Biloxi Boy

Man With A Golden Arm
I can no longer read all of Hu's badge but know it has something to do with Smorg. Also, there used to be several similar avators/badges, but I do not know who all, how many, etc. Sadly, there is a whole generation who knows nothing about Smorg. (I lurked for years but am terribly deficient.) So, I would say it's time to stir the fire and tell/hear the whole story, and anything else we should know about Smorg.

And please, mods, please fix Hu's and the others' avatars so we can read them. Thanks.

short for smorgasbord? if not, i have no clue, but as a non english speaker i'm curious. it sounds quite mean. like a dragon in lord of the rings or something

a similar word, smert, was both the abbreviation for the soviet secret police and is the russian word for death

Close, but not quite, it is "smorgasbored". Someone will tell us more I am sure -- harkens back to the Golden Age of AZB, from what I grasp. Someone needs to go wake up the old farts.

"Smorgass Bored" was the AzB screen name for Alan 'Douglas' Winslow, usually known here as Doug or Smorgie. He died in March of 2009 at the age of 63.

If you read some of the posts and guest-book comments in the following two links, you will see how well regarded he was on AzB.

a lengthy thread started when Doug's end was near:

his obituary:

From his wife…..Smorg passed about a month before I joined…read a lot about him through JoeyA and Shooting Arts

To my wonderful husband. Many thought this marriage might not work due to age or difference in lifestyle. We lived our vows to the fullest. These were the best years of my life and it was all because of you. Your love, devotion, support, uncanny humor and zest for life carried us through each day. You lived each day for my comfort and happiness. You will be missed by all of your family and friends in Tampa and those who loved you in New Orleans. Til we can be together again, I live the life you wanted, in spirit and heart with you in mind.
Anyone having pictures are encouraged to send them to my e-mail. I would like to view them. Doug wished that contributions be made to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers. Please view his Tribute page and enjoy.
I love you man....IMO

Smorg was a long time habitué of RSB and ASP before AZ -- I believe he showed up for one get together with a cane and an arm in a sling.

He was quite the character with two of his favorite responses being, "YeeHaw!" and when displeased, "Go kill yourself, please." And on occasion he would relate a classic tale such as the time he played for and won Billy Bob's "Bob," or when his entire crew was hustled when a guy claimed he could knock over a bowling pin using nothing more than a few playing cards.

Back around 2005 I was in his Florida neighborhood (he was also known as "Tampa Tubby"). He was a gracious host, getting the PR open early and bringing in fresh coffee and donuts for a couple of days.

He claimed, whether true or not, that the pig valve they'd used on his heart had failed. His passing was a big loss for the online pool community.

I don't think mods have anything to do with avatars; those are customized by individual members.

Here is a thread I found regarding the badges (Hu's Avatar):

Below is his original badge as posted by Bigtruck in 2008. I enlarged it a bit to make it easier to read. You can't see the whole thing in his currently displayed Avatar because the original badge has an aspect ratio of 0.795:1. The space for avatars on the board displays in a 1:1 ratio and auto-adjusts the image if it's not that ratio. He'd have to add to the width to get the 1:1 ratio for you to see the entire badge.

Also, he posted last year saying he modified the original badge Avatar by inserting an old picture. The resolution of that image is too low for me to recreate here.

Hope that explains why you can see a full image in some avatars where in others, the image gets cut off in some way.

Later renamed !Smorgassbored so he always appeared at the top of the rep rankings (back when that was a thing / a way to send messages).
