Speaking of pocket size.............

They played this match on a GCIII with 5 inch pockets. Grady Mathews mentioned how they were 5 inch pockets. And then he called them tight pockets. I couldn't believe how big they were, almost buckets!

Was this the norm for tournaments back around 1990? If they played on this nowadays would anybody ever miss???

You would miss. I'll let you play the ghost on 5" pockets 5.25" side pockets and you can bet whatever you can afford.

Not sure why someone that reads as much about pool as you do thinks that there are going to be 11 packs run constantly because they are 5" pockets.

He never claimed he wouldn't miss. He never claimed that there should have been huge runs. He simply commented on Grady calling them tight and compared that to recent trends.

I have a feeling that Grady would be amazed at the pool being played today.

I don't understand why pool players automatically go to, "I'd bet anything against you" whenever someone criticizes a pro. If I commented on Farve playing badly in a game with four interceptions thirty years ago, nobody would bet that I couldn't do better. No shit. I would have zero attempts, brown pants, and a ride in an ambulance.

As another point, there is more to stingy pockets than opening size. I have 4.75" pockets that play tighter than many tables. Well hit balls will drop at any speed, but errors are punished.

How about a time stamp where Grady calls them tight?

5" is the standard Gold Crown pocket size. Has been since the beginning of Gold Crowns in 1960something. Isn't your GC4 table 5"?

The only way to get them smaller is a "Tournament Edition" from the factory, which started with the GC4 for a higher price, or have a mechanic add shims or extend the cushions.

These tournaments were great- the break wasn't as cookie cutter as it is now, you had a to have a great stroke due to the slow cloth, and guys took more risky shots because of the bigger pockets. In fact, I'd love for them to recreate these tournament conditions to see how the current pros would approach such equipment.

The IPT was an attempt to do that. The fuzzy cloth didn't slow anyone down.

The cloth was faster! It was 760 in the 90s!

Pocket size has more to do with the overall play of the game. Such a knowing you can cheat a pocket a little to get position and so on. In straight pool a more forgiving pocket can be the key to a long run. It may only come into play on just one shot to make a 40 ball run become a 110 ball run

You're new here so I'll give ya the benefit of the doubt. Everyone who is a regular knows about this guy and his incessant complaining. He has mentioned in posts about playing and running out before. If you want to review his posts that's fine, but it's a known that if he can find something to complain about for not making a ball, he will do it.

So respond to those posts. I know plenty about dcp.

They had Simonis in 1990...lol. The Camel Pro Tour events I went to in the 90's were played on Camel color 860.

Go to 6:45 or so. Grady calls it a "tough-pocketed table" and that Sigel's shot down the long rail was very missable.

And of course, Sigel hits it with tons of body movement and uses ALL of the pocket. Would have missed by a mile on a modern WNT table.
