Why are there so few black pro players..?

I heard Left-Handed Kevin makes goes to Q-Ball's room in Capital Heights. Left-Handed Kevin and I were buddies. He spent many a late night at Champions in action. I miss him.

Silver Hill was THE action place for many years.

I love your Bus Driver Ronnie story. I hadn't seen him in a long while because I took a hiatus for pool when I was working downtown DC, but I ran into him at my first U.S. Open in Virginia about 2002, and we started chatting and picked right up. I miss him too. He's 82 years old.

Found this little nugget here: Famous Pool Sharks
The best Black players during the bad old days of racial segregation when they couldn't compete in the major billiards tournaments: "Lucky Charms" aka "Sizzle" Adams, Fat Albert, Arizona Slim, Joey Barnes, "Patcheye" Basheer, Melvin "Strawberry" Brooks, Ace Brown, Eddie Brown, "Bus Driver" Ronnie, Johnny "Cannonball" Chapman, Detroit Slim, James Evans, Andrew "The Gent" Gentry, George "Rotation Slim" Hairston, "Marvelous" Marvin Henderson, Buffalo Jerry, Cliff "Spotmaster" Joyner, Henry "Lotsa Poppa" McCloud Jr., Willie Munson, James "Cisero" Murphy, Leonard "Bugs" Rucker, Ike Runnels, Mark "Tadd" Tademy, T-Bone, Cecil Tugwell, Javenly "Youngblood" Washington, Edgar "Shake and Bake" White, Robert "Rags" Woods

According to Jay Helfert, James Evans was "one of the best pool players that ever lived. PERIOD!" Helfert ranked "Youngblood" Washington, Cisero Murphy, Marvin Henderson, Bugs Rucker and John "Cannonball" Chapman as "the great ones." Helfert's honorable mentions include Cliff Joyner, Robert "Rags" Woods, Cecil Tugwell, Mark Tadd, Black Nate, Strawberry and Gabby. Helfert also mentioned that the only player he ever saw beat Ronnie Allen even at one-pocket was Marvin Henderson.
Has anybody ever heard of Dennis Spears from new jersey

It does always amaze me that a thread like this: They call it modulation. What a joke this forum is

So pardon as I pick my parachute, and come I and say- we don't need no prancing poppinjays speaking like they knew the name of the game

Like they knew black from white... We just need a few who say 'i don't care' and just keep typing the board like uhhhhh the warriors.

bring back the Pool halls
Reject the golf courses

and it goes back to when segregation pushed money to the golf course. Not terrible but it was a move away from the wizardry of pocket billiards.

And nowadays it's an entire drive of excitement and fame and fortune- we should all ask where are the black players? Where ARE the players from America?

Everybody thinks they can beat a kid, but that isn't necessarily the case when the KID has played more pool in a year than they have played in their life.

I just played against a kid in a tournament. I got exactly four shots in three games in the match, all from very low-quality position he had left me in. He ran out from everywhere, kicked, jumped, broke out trouble. It was a joy to watch.

11th grade he's in. Maybe there is a future.

Your ignorance, and America’s ignorance and Bigotry is incredible. Race is a Social, Cultural, and Psychological, construct, it has nothing to do with Intellect, Learning ability, or talent. It predicts ability to absorb the Rays of the Sun, and the resistance to catching Sickle Cell Amenia, more than anything else. Did you look at Ohtani, and say that an Oriental Baseball Player could never be a great Baseball Player, and especially succeed at Pitching and Batting, and be dominant at both? What the Hell would his Race have to do with it? Did you say that, if Oriental players were good enough, they would have been in America, and be already showing the world that they could do it?? When the 4 minute mile mark was reached, many others would accomplish it, shortly after it was proven that it could be done! You cannot look at ANYONE, and say what they are not capable of doing! Are you, and America really that stupid? The problem with the Sport of Billiards, among many others, is Idiots like you, that think that you are automatically superior to anyone else, and that you can observe them and put limitations on them and their ambitions, and determine their ceilings, and what you believe they are capable of achieving! That is exactly what I was trying to explain earlier, and the results we see from the rest of the world, being more accepting and intelligent than America, and the rest of the world is kicking our Asses in the games that America was supposedly Superior in, and invented! The results are Clear, 300 million people are not putting us at the top, and there is no automatic superiority. We are getting our Asses handed to us, and we are too ignorant and prejudiced to see that we need to have equal opportunities for everyone.
Blacks don't have equal opportunities..?How so..?

Don't feed the animals. That nimrod belongs in the NPR zoo. Some of these butthurt wokes get all pissy if you say ' i don't care' when it comes to this shit. Well, i don't. I don't see pool(or any other game/sport) as some racially charged sociology experiment. It is what it is. There just aren't many black players just like only about 7% of MLB players are black. Why?? Don't know and don't really give a fk. This whole dumpster-fire of a thread belongs in NPR. Or better yet the trash.

but on the tv show there was only ONE archie bunker who was held in check by his wife and daughter and son in law -and a team of comedy writers

I forgot "Youngblood" James Brown outta Houston. He and I spent many a day driving around LA rooms looking for action. Same age 76 yrs old but he could catch a lot more action than me because he just played all the games better. One thing about him was he could always go back to the room and play again because he was such an easy guy to match up with. He's been in poor health the last few years and I haven't been able to locate him. I hope he's living with his daughter. He could play for any amount as he had a big heart.

Not because you say so, you can go in the trash with it. Your views aren’t more important than anyone else’s, but facts are true, and Pool has a past that definitely looked at Color and Race. They called it “The Filipino Invasion” when Patrica and Efren came to America, and changed the game forever. If Pool was Color-blend, what did The Filipino players invade, Genius?

I’m not an Animal, Asshole. It’s obvious that you are uncomfortable discussing matters of Race, but keep your ignorant, racist, regencies, to your Damn self, Neanderthal Knuckle-dragger. I don’t need your permission to give my opinion, I spoke about the subject at hand, giving my opinions, but I never called you out of your name, Idiot. Can’t you discuss Pool, without insulting others when you have different opinions? Where did you go to school? Have you ever heard of a Debate?

You, calling the Award winning NPR as being a Zoo, says everything about you. You have something against NPR, evidently they are too liberal for you, but you do realize that NPR is among the most popular radio programs in the country, with a network of more than 1,000 public radio stations, and has corporate sponsors from all over the country, right.? I bet you think that they are stupid, but YOU’RE SMART, huh? Stick to Pool, please, you’re too ignorant and uninformed to be criticizing the Network that has 54% being college graduates, and 21% having some college, and was voted the most trusted news source in the United States. You bashed NPR twice, during a Pool conversation! You, Idiot.

Mysteriously to you, Black players grew up idolizing Mosconi, Hoppe, Greenleaf, Buddy, Siegel, Strickland, and others, like Bugs, Rags, Strawberry, and more, but we didn’t say, he’s the “White Champion’, we worshipped and idolized the same players as anyone else. We just understood that if we just got the right to vote, and integrate the schools in 1965, and Cisero just got to play in his first U. S. Open in 1966, beat Balsis, Jimmy Moore, and Lassiter in Straight Pool in 1965, something had to be wrong. You, would not see it, although the players that protested for Cisero obviously did.

Sometimes you provide constructive and knowledgeable content, and even when you're ripping into people there's an air of humor that I enjoy reading. This is not one of those times... This level of ignorance is quite honestly gross.

Telling the truth is not Ripping into people. You need facts and truth in any meaningful conversation. It’s not my responsibility to Sugarcoat the truth, and I didn’t lie on anybody. I love Pool as much as anyone else, and I admired, followed, worshipped, and looked up to the same players that you did. The truth is, until 1966, Black players couldn’t play in the U.S. Open, and Michael Jordan, and all other Blacks, were not allowed to go to North Carolina or Duke, in the 1960’s, just like in Pool! It’s stupid, racist, and ignorant! That’s not pointing a finger at anyone on this Forum, but it’s the truth. Opportunity just wasn’t granted. That’s all, and it can’t be denied.

I didn’t ignore anything, and I have an understanding of everything that I said, and it was respectfully thought out, before I even made any statements. I was called names, racist, derogatory ones, and I know that you can’t find any comments where I called someone a slur or insulted them personally, until I was referred to as an Animal, or unintelligent. I can discuss Pool, or Argue, or pass insults, or Jokes with the best of them. I’m not a new Wallflower, bring it as you want it. I have been discussing Sports since before Mosconi vs. Fats, Mizerak vs. Siegel, or Earl vs. Efren.
