1990 US Open Sigel & Varner - 5 Inch Pockets

Lifelong Wisconsin Packer fan here, nobody was as hard on Favre (I know, looks like I spelled it wrong but its not spelled like you think it would be) as we were. He had a great arm but threw wwwaaaaaayyyyyyyy too many interceptions. Now his arm on Rogers (before he went looney) body would have been incredible to see. Poor Aaron could never do the 2 minute drill like Favre. It used to be with Favre if they were within a touchdown at 2 minutes or less and we had the ball we knew the Packers would win. With Rogers I would bet it was only about 30-40% tops, he just couldn't ace the 2 minute drill. Looks like Steelers are Superbowl bound this year.

I know I spelled Farve wrong. One of my closest friends in HS was a favre, spelled the same.

Didn't read all of the posts, so excuse me if this has already been mentioned. But that was back before low-deflection shafts. LD makes a huge difference and is probably more responsible than anything else for the need for much tighter pockets, especially at the pro level.

lol.

Speaking of pocket size.............

They played this match on a GCIII with 5 inch pockets. Grady Mathews mentioned how they were 5 inch pockets. And then he called them tight pockets. I couldn't believe how big they were, almost buckets!

Was this the norm for tournaments back around 1990? If they played on this nowadays would anybody ever miss???

Pool hall by me (Romines) has a crapload of gold crowns with 5 gallon bucket pockets we call em.

It's where I go to feel good about myself if I am in a slump. You can hit the long rail halfway up and still pocket a cut shot in the corner. You can do crazy caroms with confidence in 9ball. It's not impossible to miss, but it's damn sure hard if you're trying to pocket balls.

so say how many packages of 3 or 5 nine ball runs you make on the buckets.
i ask because so many say pool is too easy of pockets bigger than say 4.5 or even 4.25 and need to be small.
and no one says how many racks they run on the easy pockets.

i used to bet very good players and still will even money they dont run nine balls out after the break.

Why is there 2 spots on the table where they are racking??

As I said on page one of this thread........

It looks like there was a rule that if you scratched on the break the 1B was spotted right in front of the 9B. Both Mike and Nick played safe off of this during the match. Watch a little of the match, you will see what I mean.

Maybe one year they’ll do a straight pool tournament on the Bigfoots at DCC. Then we can all see how hard it is or isn’t for someone to put up a 150 ball run.
They did one year have the high run challenge on the 10' tables. I think it might have been around 2014. I believe the high run was about 115 by a French player. Bob would remember for sure. The other years on 9' tables it was usually well into the 200's.

Stuart Pettman. I might have called his attempts.

Wow, you must be a really good pool player!!! If you are calling GC III pockets "5 gallon buckets" what are you calling Valley 7' table pockets?
What is your fargorate?

German junior player Felix Vogel competed and did very well in this year’s US open. Are you telling me the great players of yesteryear couldn’t get out on today’s pro tournament conditions?

I imagine anyone winning stuff was no stranger to itty bitty pockets. There is probably a relative deluge of ready and able now. This might up the requirements into the fail zone for the old champs.

Boy, your name is apropos.

I can't have a joke with my buddies who shoot at our pool hall? I gotta worry about being gatekeeped on a billiard forum by some tool worried about my fargo rating?

Here's how this situation goes, I tell you my fargo, and no matter what I say it is, you'll call it low. And if it happens to be above your threshold of approval, you'll just say I'm lying.

So, here it is for you. It's 6getbent.

Seriously though, if calling large pockets large infuriates you this bad, see a doctor, your blood pressure has to be higher than giraffe balls.

You got me, Romines has large pockets.

The wing ball was going every time, so the TD moved the spot up higher. (has nothing to do with a scratch on the break. This was before Texas Express rules, so on a scratch on break, any balls made were spotted, and if the 1 was above the headstring, it was spotted, BIH in the kitchen )
