Dress code in tournaments

If you dress like a bum, talk like a bum and act like a bum, people will think you're a bum. Nobody wants to be associated with a bum, even if he can play pool. What brand could possibly benefit from being worn by or promoted by bums? Being poor can happen by accident, being a bum never does.

I'm against a dress-code.

If a player is effortlessly running the table wearing flip-flops, shorts & a ripped t-shirt then so what? Who exactly would be put off of pool by this?

If anything - it would probably appeal more to a casual to see players wearing what they wanted. Would give the players character - instead of all looking like a bunch of clones of each other.

There is no successful sport that I am aware of where players wear flip flops and ripped t-shirts.

you can dress anyway you want until you are in someone else's venue. then you have to go by their rules.
and if their rules are lax it is then on them.

i personally never judge someone by their dress standards. that is so 1950's u.s.a.

In a two day tournament everyone can be accommodate. When the hot seat match occurs, half the field is knocked out by then Implement the dress code in stages. No enforcement on day 1, as they're dead money. Remind the dress code for those coming back on day 2.

Too much confusion. Just have the dress code. The dead money that do not want to comply will easily be backfilled by dead money willing to comply.

These threads are funny. Looking at the players to bring in sponsors is looking in the wrong direction. Sponsors buy audiences not athletes. The players could play stark naked and if the audience was large and rich enough, Rolex would be in.

The most likely sponsorship opportunities probably come from beer, liquor and energy drink companies. Cultivate an audience that likes to buy these things in large quantities and the money will follow. Focusing on fan experience, not the trousers of the players is the place to start. What's the value proposition of attending the average pool tournament as a spectator? The average single A baseball game is more entertaining. At least they'll have a bat retrieving dog and a souvenir cup beer special.

nothing wrong with that. i would add weed, casino / gambling, nicotine companies. i don't understand the contemporary shunning of these kinds of sponsorships in sports. it's paternalistic bs

On the flip side, it’s easier than ever to look great in public now that dressing like a slob is in.

No doubt. I wore a nice pair of casual brown pants, leather shoes, button-up linen shirt and a beater fedora to the bar the other night and had half the place commenting on my excellent style. Forty years ago, that would have been normal...except the fedora.

Could be tux shirt and tie with vest.

Invitational with big name sponsors … GM, Budweiser, etc.

Mondero (sp) seems to have figured an ROI and supports the Puerto Rico tournament.

... can only happen if the viewers are measured in the hundreds of thousands or more. The traditional US regional event has no chance to get those viewers. No viewers, no sponsorship money.

the most boring game to watch is poker. yet they made it fairly exciting to watch on tv for the masses, and look how it has grown . simple as that.

My $0.02:

I turned on the feed and SVB was at the table. My initial unedited gut reaction was “I thought this was the tournament” and I checked to ensure I had chosen the correct video. When I realized I was indeed watching the right feed, I was surprised and TBH, disappointed.

Watching so many MR events I was taken aback that the players were dressed so casually. MR has taught me to EXPECT a certain look that to me, elevates the sport.

Pool Player like being free spirits , not subject to Rules of conduct, or Dress Codes. That is part of reason Pool has image, most sponsors want nothing to do with.

The price of attracting Sponsor's Money is it is not a FREE Gift, it is an investment Sponsor want a sizable return on.

Rolex is a good example of a Sponsor, they Sponsor the Sport were the Fans, and P{artispant have the income to buy a Rolex.
