Ever do this?

I remember Bob Byrne saying "put a good tip on the end of a broom stick and Mosconi could beat you all night with it and then sweep the joint on his way out" or something to that effect.
A broomstick actually hits pretty good without a tip. My father used one in exhibitions and chalked the end just like a cue. Probably for looks more than anything, but you get the idea. Center ball, slow stroke it around.

I used to gamble with a guy that liked to do weird shit. We played pool with all kind of weird things including playing with the lightweight mops and brooms or just the handles. Found out that you could use spin with just the wood and chalking it did help. There were a few mops and brooms around that bar with a crosshatch cut on the top of the handle with my trusty Buck so it held chalk better.

Well, if you can play, you can play with anything straight with a good tip. What does everyone like to say here? “It’s the Indian, not the arrow”.

Having said that, I’m sure race car drivers can put on a better performance in a Shelby 500 GT than in a Ford Escort.

Some people believe equipment is solution to better playing, or playing better.

Same people believe in Santa Claus.🎅

🤣

The best cue I ever played with was a twelve ounce snooker cue sixty inches long. 11mm at the tip and it had a very early dud on it. I learned a level of cue ball control with it that few would believe. After being able to do it with that cue for six months or so I could do it with almost any cue off the wall. That began my era of near theft. I could make a cue ball do almost anything but sit up and beg. That 12 ounce cue was also the hardest cue to play with I ever touched that wasn't cracked or had a loose weight. Two old guys I respected used that set up so I kept working on it myself.

I started trying to shoot all shots from sixteen to twenty inches, twelve to twenty-four outside, rarely out to thirty inches. At those ranges very few shots are hard including combos and breaking out clusters. Getting lucky when I needed to was my secret.

But the Shelby will have more power, better suspension, tires, etc. As long as the 2 cues you compare are straight and have similar tips the only thing "better" about the custom cue is the looks, I fail to see how that will help you play better. I have cues that I prefer over others but none that make me shoot better or worse for that matter.

When I play down in my basement I generally play with a Dufferin off the wall. They hit fine. I do have a favorite that is 60 inches and has a 12mm tip. As I am hitting 2 1/8 inch snooker balls. I would have no problem grabbing a house cue off the wall as long as the tip was adequate.. But then my regular shooter is a cuetec so I am not so classy. YMMV.

And some people think they could play exactly the same speed with ANY cue, or even a broomstick. How many world championships were won with a broomstick or a warped house cue? .....Yeah, didn't think so.
Mosconi could beat me with a broomstick. So what? Could he beat Irving Crane with a broomstick?

To my experience, nobody maintains house cues anymore. Every pool room I've gone into the past decade doesn't maintain.them at all. What starts off as an ok one piece becomes unplayable once they use a push on rounded tip.

I have played with a broom handle as a money making proposition. A wooden handle that held chalk well and I was able to sweep up when done. 🤷‍♂️ No Really.
It ain't the arrow it's the Indian.
