Remembering Buddy Hall

He practiced ALL THE TIME.
A few years back, A gentleman from Louisiana,
was working part-time in Tulsa in the oil or gas business, a Good 1 P player, would come to Magoos on the weekends to play-
Told me He used watch Buddy practice by himself -shoot all day....sometime just 1 particular shot over and over for hours,
Jeremy Jones said He was watching Buddy on a shot-shooting left-handed, shooting so well thought Buddy was left-handed

Interestingly enough, Pat Fleming told me he stopped practicing in the later part of his career...do you know what he was working on in practice or was it more playing a lot..?

Buddy lived in tulsa a few times over the years. When i first met him in 80ish he would toss balls on the snooker table and run out from everywhere. Never saw him do drills per se, he'd usually get warmed-up then matched-up. I don't think he wanted waste good shoots for free. If you wanted to hit balls with him you had to bet something. One time he told this local cat, " I don't have much fun playing for fun."

Buddy said commentating that Efren once was looking for someone to gamble with playing left-handed and when someone pointed his manager to him, Bata went '' No! No! '' :D

I had that "91 accustat VHS tape(had blue sticker on it with description/match) and must have watched it a 100 times when I was young and playing pool. We would always rewind a cut shot he made then drew back up table off the rail close to side pocket (had to see it) but it was frickin great. Had to pause play briefly because the audience kept on clapping nor could he stop smiling.

Funny story about that match, been looking for years hoping see it again only to find nothing. I was at the derby in 24' and sitting next to Archer by the Bigfoot table. Had a cueball for him to sign and I asked him about that match and what it meant to us watching it back then. Lost or probably borrowed it out never see it again. He says to me "I don't know why they haven't posted (accustats I assume)that match out there(YouTube), it was probably the best match ever/near the top between us" or something along those lines, been a couple years. . Coming from someone who was on the losing end tells you how good it was. I am still waiting for someone to post it to YouTube just so I can maybe watch it one more time. It was that good! If I recall there wasn't many matches on that tape.

I was working on a short track pit crew when I first saw Buddy. Bobby Allison and many of the NASCAR greats we saw race on TV raced against us. Bobby in particular always held court with a dozen or more drivers huddled like a bunch of puppies at his feet. I go in Greenway and there is a very tall looking guy leaning up against the counter, one foot propped up, holding court. At the time Buddy just had the beginnings of a beer gut. What I noted was that it looked like all of the best shortstops in Baton Rouge huddled at his feet like a bunch of puppies, just like Bobby Allison.

All of the money players at his feet and nobody playing told me all I needed to know. I did play Johnny but that is another story. Wish I had played Buddy and Parica just for the memories. Everyone that was anyone in pool eventually passed through Greenway. I did try to hook up with Keith, didn't happen just for logistics in those days before cell phones.

He has i was just trying to help the dude out. Pat might have inside dirt on where the old stuff may lurk.

I hope somebody does. A combination of a few things has hurt sales of old video. Less demand as people are less aware of old players, production quality, and some people won't watch black and white video even with decent production quality.

I know little about video. Perhaps some of the old stuff could be remastered? I wouldn't go so far as colorizing black and white video but clearer video would often be nice.

AS has been remastering some stuff. Its night-n-day when you watch one. Also, the 1991 US Open was a ESPN deal so AccStat probably doesn't have any of it. I just did a lil dig and found this. AS's USOpen stuff only goes back to '92.

I've worked with the gutteral/deep gurgling laugh.... that was Buddy. Spent time with em in the booth/accustats.
Here's funny match moment, bar table. 91-93 I played traveled 2 weeks out, 2 weeks home with my two young daughters.
At the time, triangles in bars were not good for a tight rack.
I carried with me my own Wood Works wooden rack, gettin' beat because of warped plastic/not goin' there.
So my match was called, me vs Buddy.
During the game Buddy Knew my rack gave me an advantage, he didn't like it.
During the match.... Buddy asked if he could use my Wood Works.

"I looked at em'' smiled and said.

''can I use your break cue''.?
Buddy lost.

You would have still had an advantage knowing your rack but not as much of one if you both used it.

I never cared if people used their own cue ball or set of balls. Then one day I brought a cheap set of balls to a quality pool hall. I bought these balls for thirty dollars with the original intention of cutting them up for a project. Much to my surprise they played night and day better than the house supplied balls! Now I would think about it more when people ask to use their own equipment. Serious money match or tourney, I would probably contest it.

the rack is part of the table imo. Bringing your own stuff is not real kosher in my book. If some cat brings his own balls/rack i'm gettin a spot.

I might allow a rack with both using it. From what I found out about those cheap balls and the measle ball I tried for months, I don't think playing with the other person's pool balls would fly. A far bigger advantage than I once realized. Reminds me of a privileged few using a private set of balls for several years in the high run competition at the Derby.

Memory fails now as to who it was but a legend said to get your own balls on the table as soon as possible. Failing that, at least get your cue ball on the table. If you can't at least get your cue ball on the table it might be best to pass on the action. Roughly his words, not mine.

An added tidbit to this moment.
Buddy and I knew, the stripes were not Worn Out and they Did rack tigher.
Then he tried to tell me, NOT to use the 10-15 to save another coin drop, why?.....because he Knew I got a tighter rack, the 1-9 balls were well worn during this 9 ball era in OH.
He tried to tell me to do another coin drop, I just smiled and used the balls in the ball box.

In 1996 at the US 9 Ball Open Champion in Virginia Beach, VA as A Billiards Vendor Bob "QRunner" Watson, Buddy ( with permission from Huckleberry Publication). at / Autographed his and W. Woody Book at my vendor table... a course we both from Southern Ill. Couldn't ask for a nice-er guy! Along with Nick Varner and some others at the table/ booth.
