2025 Reyes Cup, Oct 16-19, Manilla. Team Asia vs Team World

Duong seems to be on board with the mercy idea, having made three consecutive errors in rack one vs Woodward, the third of them with ball in hand.
For sure. In his teams win, he opened his runout with a cross side bank at 4-2 down. The safe looked so much easier, but I think the 7-0 score made the go-for-it shot the right shot. He barely got into the far side of the pocket.

Much thinner crowd today. I'm watching on Sky myself. It's just not competitive so far and the fans have lost interest in what seems like a foregone conclusion. I'm not seeing any fight back.

More like grab that 10K and vacay until the Philippine Open.

At least the crowd is making noise today and actually heckled Moritz as he was getting down on the final shot for the win.

You can also see Woodward and Shaw's wives in the back trying to get them going.

It looked like a foregone conclusion after day one, too.

The real problem with this event is that there is no rivalry here. Nobody views Asia as their rival at pool. The reason that the Mosconi Cup worked so well was because pool took off in the early 2000s in Europe and it was clear that the Europeans were gaining on the often-conceited Americans.

It meant everything to Team Europe when they beat Team America, and once they started to make a habit of it, the Mosconi meant everything to Team USA, which sought redemption and revalidation.

The humble, but sharpshooting Asians have no rival at pool. Efren, for whom this event is named, has always been a symbol of the humble excellence with which the top Asian cueists are associated.

I think I'd watch with more enthusiasm if it were Philippines vs Rest of Asia.

Yapp, Ko Ping Chung, Ko Pin Yi, Duong and Oi

vs

Biado, Chua, Raga, Regalario, Roda

would be very close.

Hoang wins 5-1 in a laugher. I didn't see any support for Skyler from any of his team mates during the match. Looks like they've thrown in the towel. 8-1

The 5-0 final match just an exclamation point on it!

Do you think they should make the Reyes Cup Team Philippines vs Team China or Team Vietnam? Or even Team Philippines vs Team Asia could work.

Keep Mosconi USA vs Europe and make the Reyes Cup Philippines vs everyone else.

I've added to post #365 to try to answer this.

They realize just as well as the many no-shows today that Team ROW is locked into second place money. Nothing left to play for.

Still, my guess is we'll get Neuhausen's best. As a first timer, he'll be a little more into it.

I think Team Europe gunning for revenge would have been a better match. I get totally why MR allowed Fedor to be "American" to try to balance the Mosconi Cup, and then went from Europe to ROW to make "Europe" stronger - but essentially yes it needs to be about team identity and rivalry.

I've often argued that the ability to kill the cue ball off a wide angle is one of the marks of the greatest champions. Biado's six ball in rack one vs FSR/Neuhausen offered a good example of how much finesse this kind of shot takes. Well done!

If it's acceptable for the USA to face defeat every year in Mosconi, I don't see why it should be considered unacceptable for Asia to dominate in a similar way.

Skyler sums up ROW.

but he's got the best beard

It's not unacceptable, but the difference is that at the Mosconi, the rivalry is so hot and heavy that people continue to show up in droves year after year despite the fact that it often looks lopsided on paper. The Mosconi sells thousands of tickets within hours of those tickets being made available for sale because the rivalry is so real.

If Asia dominates this routinely, non-Asians will stop watching, as there is no rivalry here.

Comedy of errors for ROW. Sky should never get anywhere near the Reyes again. FSR has been just awful. Asia just having fun because they know they have won.
