I'm just posting to show just how big/popular the game is. Its being shown on a national network, NBC, in the heart of football season. That's some pull. Will pool EVER be on a football Sunday? Pipedream right now. Its not a live show but it being on national tv is still pretty big.

If mosconi was more competitive I could see it. I haven't watched darts really. Close matches and a loud drunk crowd ( is that the attraction to a non-player?)

Not while pool fans have an issue with crowds going crazy and loud like at the Mosconi and even louder.
If the common viewer can’t feel the action then it’s a no go.
Might as well watch chess

I'm not a darts follower, i just saw the listing and posted. Its hugely popular even in some US spots. Bullshooters in Arizona is BIG time into darts, and pool too. There used to be leagues here in Tulsa pre-covid. Don't know if its back or not.

TV coverage is one thing. Look at payouts for this tournament. 128 players and the first round losers get £15k, basically just for earning their place in the field, and £25k for the next round losers so that first match has over $13k on the line. How often does a pool tournament match have that much riding on it?

I guess this littler cat is a phenom with back-to-back WC's. He's made just shy of 3million pounds, around $4mill, so far this season. Pretty sporty.

That is likely a two year total. The rankings, which determine if one is still a pro tour player, are based on earnings over 2 years. Players higher than 64 (and didn't earn their card last year) just got fired. Tour school is soon and players can earn their card back.

Yep. Two-year total, just checked. Still not chicken feed. The guy in 25th place has made about 400k US in two years.

When Matchroom Sports founder, Barry Hearn, became PDC (Professional Dart Corporation) chairman in 2001, he was on a mission to transform the sport. He said that one day, the winner of the PDC World Darts Championship will receive a seven-figure check. That became a reality last night.

Darts is booming, largely thanks to Sky Sports’ £125million five-year TV deal, but Hearn believes the financial ceiling can be raised even higher, "I look at darts now and I think, okay, we’ve done well, £25million prize money, £1m for the winner. So the next target is to get to £100m prize money with £5m to the winner."

If pool can get get even 'remotely' close to these #'s it would be earth shattering for the game.

Back in my NYC days I used to carry a set of darts in my cue case. Always fun to take a break from pool and play darts and it’s more fun if you don’t have a partner, even played some bar league back then.
It’s also easier to get better at it as putting a dart board at home is easier than fitting a pool table…
There was a time that money was tight so pool table time was too much, the dart board was free and it was also easy to get a game for beer 🍺😉

He’s incredible to watch. I didn’t pay much attention to darts until he started and now I’m a somewhat regular watcher. One benefit darts has over pool is the matches go by very quick and have constant action. The players don’t screw around between throws and each frame is exciting as the player tries for a high check out.

I like the crowds. They are slammin cold ones and they are IN TO IT. Lot better than most pool events which resemble a hospital waiting room in their 'excitement'. I remember the WC's in Qatar, wtf, that was like watching pool in a mortuary. Pathetic.

The fast pace of darts is what makes it so entertaining. Even with a 30-second shot clock, pro pool players often appear to endlessly labor over a shot. When pro pool is streamed without a shot clock, it's like watching grass grow.

Another thing that makes darts great is the beer. Fans and players alike drink while the competition is in progress, making it one big party. Many of those attending a darts event sit so far from the actual dart board that they can only watch the play on the monitor, so for many of them, it's a bit like having a party at home with the TV tuned to the darts event.

The Mosconi Cup is the one WNT-produced event in pool that takes a shot at creating a party atmosphere for the attendees. Of course, the banner WNT event is played in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in front of nearly empty stands. I am always stuck with the thought that it would be very boring to be there.

With darts, there's always a buzz (yes, double meaning intended) surrounding attendance. Heavens forbid they move it to Jeddah.
