Do the best players you know have OCD or perfectionistic qualities moreso than the average person??

Sorry, the confusion is my fault. The game was one pocket. The controlled break made predicting the break much easier and I am sure that Corey being Corey he had many hours in perfecting the break. I can't remember Corey cheating but if there were gray areas he was apt to bend the rules to the limit to favor himself.

You can rack 8 ball the same way. I wouldn't recommend any air in a 9 ball rack.😂

Is it eye hand or hand and eye? 😉
I spent my time " on the bench " when playing baseball. I juggled baseballs while seated. It served to improve the co ordination of actions without visual confirmation. Going by Feel. My favorite pool playing memory starts with, "Can you feel it?" After proposal of the bank as either cut could include a scratch. Heck in my most recent venture to play Masters in Vegas had my opponent hitting the 3 rail bank on the 9 ball, when faced with the same conundrum. 🤷‍♂️ Nice Shot.
It took me 6 months to learn how to juggle well!!
Once the stroke clicked, that opened up a whole bunch of areas previously undisclosed!!!😉

extreme determination is different from "intrusive thoughts"
everyone feels sad from time to time
that does not mean they suffer from depression
i think you are over diagnosing committed people

–compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder in which an individual has intrusive thoughts (an obsession) and feels the need to perform certain behaviors (compulsions) repeatedly to relieve the distress caused by the obsession, to the extent where it impairs general function.<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive–compulsive_disorder#cite_note-NIH20152-1"><span>[</span>1<span>]</span></a><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive–compulsive_disorder#cite_note-DSM52-2"><span>[</span>2<span>]</span></a><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive–compulsive_disorder#cite_note-Sartorius-7"><span>[</span>7<span>]</span></a> OCD has been described since antiquity and has affected numerous notable historical and contemporary figures; understandings of it were historically rooted in religion and beliefs about demonic possession.
This wasn't meant to be a forum on medical specifics, more an examination of quirks and such that many pro level players have. Could even cross into the superstition arena.
Hand washing and light switch activities are the ocd thing. Noticing the crossover into pool or any activity is all I was after.
Just having a little fun dude. If I've offended anyone, my bad.

It can be argued that quirks, tics, twitches, compulsive behaviors like that belong more to ADD ADHD then they do to OCD. More along the spectrum lines than actual ocd.

In my personal experience, the top local guys were like any other: personalities all across the board. Nothing stood out to me from their off-table game. Only they struck the ball better.

i think the champions made a commitment to be the best at a sport and were willing to do anything to make that happen.
so all the hours of practice and playing /sacrificing for that one goal and talent is what got them there
if extreme commitment to one thing above all others you want to call ocd thats your call
i also think they try to be the best not perfect

When others were scoffing at the old men when we were teens I had my ears open to all they said and treated them with respect. One of the things I heard was that if you shoot for perfect and fall a little short it can still be pretty damned good. If you try for good enough and fall short you don't have squat!

I hadn't shot my pistol in a year when three of us decided to go shoot a match. Early on I fatfingered a shot, broke it when the sights had already drifted into the nine ring. Never happen when I was in tune, but I wasn't in tuned. A little later I had drifted over where I could hear the starting buzzer better. When I bumped into my riding partners and they asked how things were going I told them about fatfingering a shot. They were surprised when my name was called out in first place after the match. I was shooting for perfect and that one dropped point was how far from perfect I fell. I might have shot five points lower had I been trying for good enough, and some of the half-dozen young guns hotly chasing each other might have snuck by me.

I don't know if it is still true but in his heyday Efren didn't change or wash shirts in a multiday or week long event.

A bit further down but I didn't own a green t-shirt or green pair of socks. You wouldn't catch me with peanuts anywhere around. All circle track superstition but between running a business or two, shooting pool, and racing sometimes I met myself going the other way. Caught myself at the track with a green shirt on. That was when everything green hit the garbage can to insure never again!

A champion short tracker named Freddy Fryer was serious about green and peanuts. Park anything green near him and he would load up all of his equipment and move to the far end of the track. One thing I personally was present for, somebody threw a handful of roasted peanut shells in Freddy's seat. Freddy took time to knock the guy ass over teakettle before having his crew pull his seat to be sure no hull or peanut was hidden under or inside the seat!

I am not superstitious but I am a little stitious. I try not to piss off the pool gods or the gods of whatever activity I am involved with at the time!

somewhat on topic, i am curious about good and great players handwriting

is it more precise and legible than the average person’s handwriting

or more messy and illegible

or maybe there is no noticeable difference between a normal handwriting and one made by someone with such good hand eye coordination that they can put a cue ball anywhere they want

It would be a good question but a much better one sixty or seventy years ago when we spent a lot of time in class learning script and had to write a lot in script. Now there is probably a strong imbalance if someone likes to play pool, script seems almost dead.

My handwriting has always been lousy, no incentive to make it better, or little incentive. I think I was a C student in all the penmanship grades. For awhile I would have rated myself a master of cue ball control not suffering from false modesty. Most of my cue ball placement came with a curse while shaking my cue stick. Three things sell a lie a lot better than one thing.

My old sometimes road partner used to holler when he shot, "Come, bruise, blister, or bleed, I ain't gonna spit no more!!" I don't know quite what that had to do with shooting pool but it would draw attention his way. He seemed like he was drunk, crazy, or both and drew action far better than my chum hanging out of my shirt pocket!
