BCA handicap, how/why did I go up?

I played BCA for about 3 years, (about 2020 thru 2022) and was a 569 handicap when I quit. I have not played BCA since late 2022. Over my time off my handicap went from 569 to 581. My robust number is 671 if that makes any difference.

I have watched a few players I played against that are still active in BCA and their handicaps have increased a bit, (one guy by about 20 points as I think he'd been baggin' it) and even though I hadn't played BCA for 3 years, does BCA move you up or down based on what others you have played are doing, even if you have not played for some time?

I don't really care as if I ever shoot BCA again my handicap will find it's place anyway but I was just curious how a guy cannot play for three years and still increase his handicap by 12 points.

Thanks for any replies.

Every time someone you played plays a match, their rating is adjusted according to how they did. That gives the system more info about them and so it also gives more information about all the people they played, including you. Everyone is connected to everyone else. All of the millions of games that have been recorded are taken into account for the new ratings that are calculated every day. Josh Filler's next match is going to affect your rating a tiny little bit, even though you might be six connections away from him.

If you do start to play again, your rating will be adjusted fairly quickly because those matches from three years ago are only counted at half strength.

To add to Bob’s reply, when you say you haven’t “played BCA for 3 years” are you talking about about just the BCA pool league or have you played tournaments that report to Fargo? Has your robustness increased since 3 years ago?

12 points is a good amount of movement with a 671 robustness for not having played in 3.5 years. My bet is you played a few tournaments in the interim and forgot about them, or didn't know they reported.

If you download the fargorate app, and pay for the subscription service, it will show you all of your matches. You can pay for just a month for about $2, and then turn it off. The free version doesn't show your match history, the paid version does.

In my case, I quit at 630'sh (and climbing quick, I might add ;)) with just over 200 games (214 if memory serves me correct) and in the next couple of years (with no games) it dropped to 615'sh. That was about 4 years ago. I have played a few tournaments since then and now sitting at 617 and 254 robustness. I have always attributed it to the fact that a lot of the players I beat were low to mid 500's and now some of them are pushing 600, and a few of them might be over 600. I also beat the highest rated player in the area at the time (675) and he's now 658. His rating going down, brings mine down, all the other players ratings going up, brings mine down. So, I don't think 12 points with a 671 is that big of a deal, my guess is if he went through his history some, if not a lot, of the people he beat have had their ratings go up.

Also, you don't need to pay for the subscription to view your matches. The second icon from the left (the one with 2 heads) is your match history. You can also search by player name, turns out me and the 675 guy went 1-1.

No, I have not played any BCA for 3 years, no BCA reported tourneys, nothing. My robustness has remained the same obviously since I have not played in BCA.

Yes I have the Fargo app and can see my matches and no, I have not played in any BCA events, league or tournaments in over 3 years.

12 points represents at most a 2% shift in win probability, pretty much a rounding error.
Rounding error? if a player is inactive, especially for an extended period of time, (no league, tourneys, any BCA reported stuff), I see no reason for a players HC to change at all, especially by 12 points. I don't see the logic in it. I really don't care because I'll probably play BCA again sometime and my HC will find it's place so it's no biggie.

Thanks for the replies gents.

Because it's not a handicap reflective of your accumulated skills and abilities, it's a rating comparing your performance with the rest of the players and games in the pool at any point in time. The number can change whenever the set of players or games changes, which is daily whether you play or not.
