650 Fargo Quits Six Figure Job to Pursue Pro Pool Dream...or YouTube Fame?

if you look at pro winnings just this year 6 months some in the top 30 of players they are only in the 30k bracket and still haven't deducted expenses from that. that is not a living. that is poverty.
yea most take a second job. to add some.

I wouldn’t knock this guy for any reason. If he attains his goal, that would be phenomenal. However, I think we all have a pretty good idea of how this is going to go. [...]
Yes, and maybe maybe we should not think of this effort that many of us will enjoy following as being just about him (or his chances of success or his motivations).
What if it plays a role in inspiring others who have a bigger chance?
What if we enjoy the journey?
What if it inspires us to try to go from 450 to 500 or 600 to 650?

The guy has no chance in hell. I watched the video when it came out a week or two ago. I recall he had been playing since he was a kid. If he hasn't reached a pro level until now, he never will.
How much will he improve? How far can he push his Fargo? If you quit your job and did nothing but try to improve your game, how far could you push yours. I know it’s just a guess, but I think you have some insight on this.

I agree, and wish him the best.

Well his robustness is low. But assuming it was 1000 robustness, I'd say 15 points max. A person with a 650 rating didn't just wake up and get it. He already worked at it for quite some time.

"Forty" Rob Hart did this. I know him fairly well from Philly from the late 90's, before his brother made it. He was a strong local player then, maybe a Low A or high B+ by the old gambling system. When his brother became a millionaire movie star, Forty made pool his primary focus. He played in every pro event, even several of the international ones. He went to professional instructors all over the country. The thing is, if he comes to Philly now, his pecking order hasn't changed.

Can't beat genetics.

I know a guy in his early thirties, he has improved about 70 points, in about two years. He started playing with better players, playing a lot of tournaments, challenge matches, etc. He wasn’t starting from 650 though. He is about your speed now. It will be interesting if he can continue to ramp it up.

Maybe the move is not to dump your fargo to get into high entry capped events....

Maybe it's to dump your fargo to start a youtube channel to show improvement of 100 or 200 pints! hahaha

If he has been playing like 10 hours a week and bumps it to 30+ hours a week, I don't see any reason he can't still make significant improvement.

I think 650 to 700 in a year is pretty doable. With smart practice I bet he could do even better.

The hill only gets steeper, though. And 775+ seems tough no matter how much time and practice one puts in.

Look at the top 100 USA list and the players in the 740-775 range. Yeah, it is more than tough.

if your a 650 fargo at age 15 you have a sot at becoming a 800

if your 30 or older with a 650 fargo pool can be a part time hustle

are you over 30?

Exactly. A top local player was busting on me 25 years ago. He said he was my speed for about 2 weeks. It was true. He quit a long time ago, but I'd estimate he was a 700 speed then. A player that made it all the way to 800 was probably a 650 speed for a few months.

I'd add this.

From my personal experience, and experience staking someone who was a top shortstop.
When you start playing the pro events or the higher events EVERY week, you get better.

Not from practicing, but I think because that part about if I miss this ball, we may not be staying in a Holiday Inn tonight, might be a motel. Or maybe we don't eat as well as we would have, maybe I can't Western Union (I know dating myself there) money back to the family.

I got better and the person I was running with got much better. Playing top competition all the time seems to do that. Look at the golfers and tennis players, not the top 10 but those happy to make cuts, they are getting better, just being on the course or court.

I think you are right, the guy knows his chances of getting to 800 are slim to none. That doesn’t mean it’s some kind of scam. Assuming he makes a genuine effort, going along on the ride should be enjoyable. Similar to the enjoyment of following your FargoRate thread
