$1.5M first place prize for Chinese tournament next week

there are many near top players few hear about except locally. some are regionally great and can beat most road players. even if they are known around where they live, the road player may not be aware of them.

imagine in china or other countries where info stays local.
The unknown - and his cultural circle don't necessarily have to play better. Keeping the opposition off balance seems to be the function at work.

there aren't many unknown monsters in our time, neither in china nor outside of it.

i don't know if the JOY heyball players are allowed to compete in this, if so zheng will be up there along with the ko brothers as favorites. wu jiaqing and myint kyaw will be high up too, but likely not favorites
It only takes one or two.

Nothing like a few unknown monsters to rattle the confidence of people who have already rated the competition and think they know who they have to beat. Fighting a brutal battle you aren't expecting can exhaust you too. I wouldn't be counting any chickens either way but I would sure like to be there to watch!

i really prefer the nine ball format as it takes away the advantage of pattern play that the chinese and uk 8 ball guys have,
might be a chance for snooker players and american players to level up a little

Dumb question perhaps... if the Chinese are pumping this much money into cue-sports, what are they doing with more mainstream sports?

Looks like the round of 64 is about to start. All three Kos, Orcollo, Potts, Wu Jiaqing are still in. Ko Ping Han and Wu play each other next.

This is a great question that I've been asking for years now. The only mainstream sport that seems to get a lot of attention over there is basketball and that is because the NBA is in bed with the Chinese government. I have no idea what else is considered mainstream over there when it comes to regular sports. Do they even have a national soccer team?

I do know that the Chinese have invested heavily into the esports realm but have no idea if it has paid off as that bubble seems to have burst a few years ago.

Is this a joke post? Traditional pool players would get roasted on these tables.

Without a lot of practice on these tables, for sure. But the Ko brothers success does show it is possible for the top 9 ball players to compete if they put in the time.

Krause apparently in the final 64, with the field spit between the good Chinese players and everyone else who is learning to play nine ball on Chinese tables. Krause is in the later group, I wonder when the brackets merge?
