I was given a set of VHS tapes on cue building years ago. They sold for $100 each at the time. I learned how not to build cues watching them. Well known cuemaker who passed away awhile back. A joint was assembled using toilet paper and epoxy. While doing a leather wrap he cut his finger with a razor blade. Blood everywhere. Rather than redo the video, he continued and did a poor job on the seam. Never saw one of his cues in person.

Well, I guess now we know why he had to try to sell cue making videos, in order to make money. Because his cues that he did build may have had a horrible rep, or did not sell.
Ed or Eddie Wheat was not super Cue builder, by screwed many people.
He also offered classes at his cueniversity. He had students, but none of them would probably not admit it.

That wasn’t Perry, that was the components resale hack in FL, always claimed oem tips and real original Micarta that were poor knockoffs! I think that guy ruined layered tips for anyone who replaced a Triangle or Water Buffalo. yeah, I’m back. Can’t get enough of the peanut gallery, but enjoy the guys/gals who do give a sake about our sport that is dying by the day. The more custom cue builders we lose and don’t appreciate, the quicker, it will come. I love a nice 9 foot diamond, but give me a coin operated bar box in my basement w decent lighting and a cue I’d dream about first.
No wait!!! We can't afford to lose any more!!!

He has a poor reputation and it doesn't sound like he's made people whole either.

His Wheat Bucks were great and he did wonders with a magic marker!
N ope I have not heard of this builder, maybe reason is I have enough Cue, all a Magic when I am in the Zone. all are GARBAGEc when I am not in the ZONE..........LOL
I think this is a silly thread. Every cue maker has made a dud or two during their career. I mean all of them. I’ve shot with some Szambotis that were magical and others I could not make a ball with.
Dave Kikel told me a story of a guy that loved a cue he made him. The guy feel on hard times and sold it. Got back on his feet and could not buy that cue back for any amount.
So Dave built him an exact copy, completely identical. The guy received the cue and told Dave it was nothing like the other one he loved so much..
Cues are funny, and as Dan Janes told me God makes the wood, we just put it together. Sometimes the stars all align and perfection happens.
As to the cue makers that come and go their work cannot be compared to cue makers that have been producing cues for over 20 years or so.
Doing business with them is filled with uncertainty, look at their background and apprenticeship for answers…

I had Richard Black make me an ebony four-point back in 1978 and it may have been the best playing cue I ever had.
A young Air Force guy in the Philippines talked me into selling it to him in 1981 when I had Richard make me another cue more expensive than the first one.
They were different styles (four-point vs Merry Widow) and different woods, but both cues had steel joints and were built to the exact same specs.
I sold the four-point to the young guy before I put in much time with the Merry Widow.
The Merry Widow didn't play anywhere near as well as the four-point.
I bought a new ebony four-point McDermott C-14 in 1985 that played way better than the Richard Black Merry Widow so I sold it, too.
I have turned down multiple offers for the C-14...as much as 10 times what I paid for it, but that cue is a keeper.

Good guy. I talked to him on the phone a few times.
Lee deserves all of the bad feedback because of the moneys he took as deposits for cues he did not deliver. Last I recall, many of those cues never materialized.
I was fortunate to receive one of the last cues he delivered. After more than 13 years, my cue is still straight together and a part. It plays fine and I still play with it. I received a custom designed 59.5” cue for not very much money.
Nice taper. Wish you could get entry level cues cut that way.
