FYI, I just posted a new video with respected snooker coach Nic Barrow that shows mechanical bridge or rest “best practices” technique that can help you be more accurate and consistent with long reach shots. Check it out:

As always, I look forward to your feedback, comments, questions, complaints, and requests.

Enjoy!

Good stuff! I know far too many intermediate players who don't bother to learn how to use a bridge extensively, but I find it to be a very useful skill.

Meand some buddies have played games where we had to use the bridge for every shot but the break. Haven't done that in a while though.

It was good practice.

@dr_dave do you know the origin of the horizontal forearm dogma? Almost every instructor or tutorial teaches it. I've chatted with several pros and instructors about it and nobody knows why or where that "best practice" came from.

Shaun Murphy is the pinnacle of rest usage. I think he even gave a brief masterclass on the topic somewhere on the tube of you. Being shorter in stature, filipinos seem to have excellent usage of the rest, albeit in typical un-textbook fashion.
The two key points Murphy notes, are getting that elbow up high with your cueing arm, and getting the rest locked onto the table or into a base that is stable as possible.

If you want to go totally left-field, check out how Sunny Akani uses the rest.

I think that one has been around a long time. I don't know the origin. Sorry.

Here is the Murphy video. It’s excellent.

Sunny’s style is similar to what Dr Dave demonstrates at the beginning of his video. Corey uses a technique like this.
