The very first glimpse of AI run-out intelligence

i think some people see pool as a refuge, a physical and analog world to escape the technology driven daily life. at least i do. i guess that's the worry, that AI holograms or whatever this is will make their way to pool rooms. what OP does at home i don't care about..

There will be definitely be a demand. I think this will be a big breakthrough using interactive tech to get people interested in the game/sport. I think it will be a big hit for upscale pool rooms and home tables. I think you will turn this into a very profitable business.

Really? Do you think it's just old dudes that aren't exactly thrilled where WE are heading with AI this and AI that? It's most certainly not. Most high school and college kids are very anxious about where we are going.

"The future of pool looks fantastic."

Why? Because of AI and the never-ending march towards perfection on the pool table. Is that it? If so, it's a big no thanks for me.

We are all going to have decisions to make in the very near future about why we even bother playing the game. If technology can be used to turn everyone into a 100 plus ball runner, will there be any value in running 100 balls?

In fairness, my comments aren't really directed at the OP and his creation, it's just a commentary on sports in general. I guess you can call me a simpleton since I'd much rather play catch in the backyard with my son, while listening to the sound of laughter and the ball smacking the leather, than bothering to hook him up to an AI aided ipad to diagnose and correct his throwing motion. What's it all for???

In sports, we are going to quickly have the naturals and the techno savants. The naturals will be horrible and mocked for their lackluster play, but their path may be the right one.
Your anxiousness is valid because we have never seen such a large change in technology during the lifetime of a generation. Gate keeping the entire pool world as a refuge isn’t realistic, even though you are allowed to be a Luddite (as Bob Jewett puts it). As long as we have capitalism and private property you can build your own basement as you like.

On the other hand it is just mean spirited to respond to someone who said they spent two years of hard work on something (anything for that matter) with the word bullshit. Use your social skills better. This is not directed to you, but in general.

i tried that game. the best "ai" opponent was mainly shooting incredible shots, not playing good position or percentage (very few safeties). it had various disciplines but not one pocket, presumably for that reason
I'm currently developing a game that features intelligent opponents; not only do they know the strategy, but they also think for themselves and choose the right shots, including safeties, push out etc. Plus, the opponents comment on your shots and their own, making it feel like you're playing against a real opponent. You can play 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, black ball, one-pocket, and straight pool.

Who's gate keeping the entire pool world? I'm just sharing my thoughts on a pool forum.

Wait, you hurt my feelings with your mean-spirited response. Now what should we do? Do we need to attend a social skills conference together?

You don't have 2 accounts by chance do you?

There's the $99 Pay Once or $19 Monthly software; a $200 camera; a $575-$1237 projector; and possibly perimeter lights at $600 -$800; (or the option to hunt down used hardware) -- so roughly like $1500 -$2300 to deploy.

On the other hand, you people buy and sell cues like baseball cards.

Sourcing your own hardware helps reduce electronic waste because many people already have some of the equipment already.

Pool actually is a very cheap hobby in comparison to others. If you are into pool, $2500 is a reasonable expendature when you include the cost of a high end pool table at home for enjoyment. Let's say you spend 10-12k on a great pool table that will last you your lifetime, then $2500 on a setup like this, you are all in for 15k. If that is your only hobby that is very reasonable for a lifetime of pleasure.
In comparison let's take fishing for an example. Most fishing boats now days go 75k-150k, then rods, lures, gas, truck to tow, and on and on.
Walleye boats start at 100k on up to 150k+ and they are selling them as fast as they can make them.
One of the best investments you will ever make if you like pool is a professional quality table, you can grow old with it and only an occasional recover without ever buying another table and never spending a dime on gas to use.
I would be interested in something like this but am not getting rid of my light for a perimeter light as I just don't like them because of their glare and light spill throughout the room. I also don't want a projector hanging down off my ceiling. I might consider it if the camera sent the signal to your computer, and then that was sent to a tv in your pool room. You can buy a 65"-75" tv for $500 for your pool room that allows you to watch tv also. I just feel projectors are so old school and would much rather have the image come up on a tv.

A friend owns a large boat dealership, besides Lund and Ranger he also sells a boatload of Nexus walleye boats, sales took a huge dive this year but you aint wrong about the prices and the way guys load those things up with accessories then hang a 400hp Merc off the rear. 3 or 4 fish/depth finders is the norm, front, rear, middle, and driver area, its crazy.

I think that down the road Trackman-like sensors to analyze cue ball data – speed, contact point, spin rate, spin efficiency, etc. would be incredible…both standalone and also as an input to an AI program like this. With enough data, it could help modify pattern play given a person’s strengths. Is using inside English to go 3 rails to the center of the table a weakness of yours? Well, we should probably look for a pattern that doesn’t require it. I expect it’d be humbling to everyone under 600 (or maybe even higher) that their contact point isn’t actually what they thought it was.

The number of people who own 7 jump cues but complain about table time going from $8 to $9 per hour in pool is astonishing

Pointless? I guess coaching in and of itself is pointless, then.
Just saying, much like chess, did developing a program that no grand master could outplay really help that game? No amount of human creativity could compete with the potential of quantum-computed self-learning AI.

My last walleye boat was 3 yrs ago at about 130k, looking at a new one now another 20 k above that. Boats aren't cheap now days but most of these expensive ones are paid with cash. I'm assuming you meant to type Vexus. That is the new one I'm looking at.

Lol! The first responders are the same group of people that sit on the internet in the middle of the day, squawk and then fly away like a bunch of seagulls. They haven’t made anything creative in their life, or have the desire to imagine how it could benefit anyone other than themselves. Garczar is always sitting in the middle, fattest of them all.

This is such a revolutionary tool that you made, and the future of pool looks fantastic!
The economics and evolution of advanced products is here now, today. Digiball will pioneer the effort because of its affordability in contrast with a setup required for something like this & DB’s obvious ease of portability for use anytime and anywhere with no setup required. I posted on the Digiball thread I envisioned the marriage of AI with its internal electronics.

Imagine communicating a question on your tablet asking about your option on how to hit the last shot differently or illustrate what you did to cause a missed shot. I feel like I am seeing space exploration when we first walked on the moon and look at where we are today thanks to JFK. What enormous strides & we’ve learned so much & look at the advancements.

I am grateful & gratified to have witnessed this evolve and am envious of all the readers that will witness and benefit from how DigiBall and now AI will impact and change pool. Whereas at the age of 80, I can only see it getting started and imagine where and what it will lead to. It will be exciting for all you youngins and I envy you over what’s to come thanks to Nate.

This has been my goal since developing my software over 2 years ago.

Note: It's very early, so the suggestionss it offers will improve over time with reinforcement learning.

Great job Gary, would love to talk to you about implementing AI shot tracking to accumulate stats for players some day.
