I was going through some stuff and found this old box of Le Pro’s. IIRC, the ones smooth on the bottom are supposed to be the “good ones”, is that correct?

I have boxes of le pros from the 90s still good. If you squeeze them side to side with pliers that will tell the tale. If they compress easily they are probably not good. If they are firm they are good to go.

I've used some old Le Pro's. Some are good, some start to separate after a short time. I was putting them on myself, so I wasn't out anything but time trying them.

The more uniform and smooth. You can also weigh them or tap them with a screwdriver.

unless dried out they will be good. and for me better than layered tips where you are hitting on glue when between layers.

or a very tiny slight seam when the top layer wears down and you are hitting that and the next layer.

Good ones, yes, then you can tap the group that shows Very little grain, and the sounds will tell you the hardness that hardened group which is likely to be what your looking for. Always used the good ones for the Players.
Prchased many boxes.... Ran a room for four yrs, had my own lathe set up at home.
I usually found 8-10 good hard Le Pros in the box, kept those.... others went on the Dufferin House cues.
