Seems to be mostly a fun thing and I use it to find friend's posts by going to "friends and contacts" on the side bar. I noticed that security can be adjusted on your profile and one setting gives friends special privileges but I don't know if anyone does that. Gives us one more toy to play with anyway. I ignored it too until people started sending me requests. Until you have a friend there is a message telling the world you are without a friend!
