STOP this is not another what is the BEST thread, as i am not a teenager looking for a magic cue.
but i am looking for OPINIONS of knowledgeable players and builders.which would give better preformance as a simple no inlay butt, a piece of solid wood or a full splice. ??
i think the full splice will play a bit stiffer, but think the one piece of wood might be a bit more solid.
btw my playing cue is straight grain maple full splice into straight grain maple,

You will find several opinionated answers. To each his own.......

The pure wood people feel like solid wood for the specific wood feel. There is a chance of warping of the butt usually around the A joint area. This happens only on some cues and usually when there is a big change in humidity or geographic location.

V groove points are thought to stiffen the butt somewhat.

Full splice cues are probably stiffer. (but, how much do you think the butt of the cue actually flexes?) Are you standing on it, jacking up a car with it, or just exposing it to a very small longitudinal shock from hitting a cue ball???

Personally, I core all my cues with a laminated maple dowel to prevent warping and to adjust weight. This also tempers the feel of the different woods used in construction . All of my cues hit about the same. Some of my cues are a one piece cored butt and some are 3 pieces of cored wood... This eliminates the A joint.

just my opinion.... players and builders have many other reasons for liking a certain type of construction...........

What feels right in your hands is what counts...

thank you, for your thoughts

maybe to clairfiy, i was talking about a solid piece of wood for the butt, no a joint.

I have built a lot of each and there is no right answer.
Maple by itself as a one piece butt does not play nearly as good as Maple forearm full pliced into a bocote handle for example IMO.
Now Purple Heart and lighter weight Bocote, certain pieces of Rosewood, Bubinga, Yellow heart and such all play pretty good as one piece butts.

I never splice the same wood into itself like you did with maple, so I do not know the answer there. But IMO some of the best playing cues are maple forearms full spliced into medium weight handle woods that balances out without a weight bolt.

A solid piece of wood for a butt has even more chance of warping. Unless you core it the full length.

I have made several like this and they are all cored full length with a one piece core. None have warped.

i core

super curly, koa, curly maple, buckeye burl etc etc., but i would never think of coreing a 30 inch piece of brazilian rosewood.

No problem...........Get out the big gun drill. I would core it with a 30 inch laminated maple dowel.............

I think it's debatable, but I know personally that the 3 best playing cues I've ever hit were all 1 piece butts. The difference between the three best cues and the next 20 isn't a huge gap, and there are full splice, 1 piece butts, as well as a just about everything else.

I think most of it comes down to the quality of the build, and material. Then the technique utilized to assemble it. A quality builder and a once piece but in the right type of wood is VERY hard to beat.
